gay equals stupid? i dont think so
i am sick of hearing the word gay being tossed around so carelessly. "that song is so gay!" how does that make ANY sense? does that song like other songs of the same gender? am i missing something here..?
i want people to know that i am gay and i find it very offensive to hear people use gay instead of stupid. i am gay. does that make me stupid?
if you are jewish and someone said "that movie is so jewish", you would get offended because jewish does not mean stupid. this is the same exact scenario: a minority being discriminated.
so why do people do this, and how do i get them to stop? =(

Good question. People are so opinionated about sexual orientations and the best way to cope with that is to just stand up for yourself no matter what. Just be yourself. Just remember that "it is better to be hated for who you are, then to be loved for who you're not". People are just this judgmental because they can't be like us. I am gay too and I've heard those kinds of stereotypes before and it just disgusts me.

The word "gay" has different meanings. As you know, it can mean "happy, lively." Or it can mean "homosexual." And nowadays, it's also used to mean "corny, silly, stupid." I think that most people who use it in that way (and it's usually kids) aren't even thinking about it having anything to do with a gay person.

When I was younger, gay was a negative connotation. A decade ago being gay was not nearly as acceptable as it is now.
Especially among the straight, if something was "gay" it was emasculated, it was negative. If a guy was gay he was a pussy and effeminate.
This is a holdover from that. To be honest, when I was younger I used it that way. Breaking that habit took a while and some effort but people have to realize that they are being ignorant assholes before they want to change something like that. Some people don't have an issue with being ignorant assholes.

i'm straight but it still bothers me when people say it. you wouldn't say thats so straight.
anyways, what i did was tell people how dumb they sounded and i basically didn't want to hear it. none of my friends say it anymore except for once in a blue moon.

I hate it when people say that. I'm so sick of hearing "That's so gay". However, I can honestly see where they're coming from, as I've let "That's so retarded" slip out more than once.
It's rarely meant to be a homophobic statement, but I definitely know what you're saying. If someone said "that's so Jewish," I'd probably smack them. I agree with what Razhie said to do-- I'm going to try that next time, also.
One of my friends is very Christian and anti-gay marriage because of how she was brought up. She constantly says "That's so gay," but it's not meant to be a homophobic statement. I've gotten her to wear a rubber band around her wrist, and every time she says "That's so gay," she painfully snaps her wrist with the rubber band. It's really helped :).

Refuse to interpret in a word in the way they intended it. Interpreting the word correctly tends to make them feel stupid and foolish, without actually having to argue with them about semantics.

it's a slang term for stupid. yeah i agree it's dumb too and i don't use it. wow i've actually heard someone use jewish though too. but really just tell people how you feel and encourage them not too use it anymore. i'm completely with you and have been trying to encourage people not too, most kids these days don't think about how offending it actually is. but don't let it get to you, try to ignore the haters they aren't worth your time.

You're right: it is just a slang term for stupid. People use it so often that they don't even realize that they could offend people with it. Next time that happens, just tell them politely that you find it offensive. The more you make people aware of how rude they sound, the more they will try to change (hopefully).
While some people use "gay" to discriminate the homosexual group, you should try to understand that the term has become so widely used in that fashion that people don't even think about what they are saying.
Try telling people how you feel and encourage your friends to do the same. Be polite at first and ask that they please stop. If they don't, try discriminating against them like they did against you (like the "jewish" example you described).
