15/f sophmore
I'm thinking of joining one of the school plays or musicals. I have hardly any acting experience but I can sing very well and i think if I really tried I would have the potential to be a good actor. My dream has always been to play a lead role in a show. Do you honestly think this is possible for an inexperienced sophmore to work their way up and eventually get a lead? Do you think it's worth the hard work and dedication?

People come from a new school that didn't have a theatre program, like me...but they were very tallented, passion is a big part of it. If you are passionate and willing to practice, and if you are willing to deal with seniority then you will be fine. [ asknava's advice column | Ask asknava A Question ]

go for it.
plus it looks good for college and everything.
if youre a good singer, and its a musical, youve got a very good chance at getting a good role.

If you can sing, dance, act, and do whatever else the part requires, it is possible you will get the role. It is certainly worth it if you are cut out for the job. Also, even if you get an ensemble part the first year, don't give up hope. Be enthusiastic and do your job well, and your director will see that. Next year, you may get a bigger part, and the next year, you'll be a senior and perhaps get an even bigger part.
Unfortunately, yes, you do have to work your way up the "food chain," and seniors are more likely to get a main part. But that is not always the case.
So, good luck, have fun with it, and don't be disapointed. Even as an ensemble member you will learn more techniques and have tons of fun. And no matter what, you're the star of your own broadway show. [ musicalblonde7's advice column | Ask musicalblonde7 A Question ]

Usually the students in the classes at my school end up in the plays, but there are always open auditions (unless it's specifically a class project being performed for the entire school).
Even if you haven't had much experience you still have a chance. You could surprise yourself and be awesome at acting. Try out, you could get the lead this year, next year, senior year, or never. There are no small parts, only small actors. Try your hardest, work your best no matter what part you get, and above all else - have fun!
I LOVE acting and find it so much fun to escape reality and be someone else. To create a character and live their life, even for a short time, it's exciting. It has always been worth the work in my perspective. Have fun =] Good luck! [ S_C's advice column | Ask S_C A Question ]
demi answered Thursday November 22 2007, 6:57 pm: you should try out. there are a bunch of people who thought they couldnt succeed and they are famous now. but you should totally go for the gold and if the roles not for you try costume design or something to help your career in theater.
