anal is an adjective that means anal-retentive, which means really really uptight. like not fun to be around whatsoever. i have a friend who is very anal. however, when your friend called you that, don't take that to mean that you need to start failing school in order to not be anal. you can still do very well in school but not necessarily devote your whole life to it, if you know what i mean. anal people are devoted to doing well and organization, and it can get on the nerves of people who are generally abstract-random.

It's short for anal-retentive, and goes back to Freudian psychology. Anal-retentives (supposedly) were potty-trained too fast and are obsessed with order and getting things exactly right. It's not really complimentary, but it's not exactly an insult.
Nothing wrong with focusing on your schoolwork.(but that's the dad in me talking.)

like you could say my parents are so anal they groudned me for no reason
so your freidns are saying that you are too serious about school and should focus on other things
but dont, school should always be your priorities because your grades in high school/college affect the rest of your life
