polygamy

Question Posted Friday October 26 2007, 4:56 pm

so if polygamy is illegal in the U.S. how are there places like Centenial Park where it's filled with polygamists? wouldn't the police or government take over those places? how does that work...

We talked about this in American Government, and if I understood correctly, the reason is:
The government doesn't know. The people practice ploygamy and don't tell anybody. But then it gets contrevercial (sp?) because they feel that their freedom of religion is being violated. It's kind of complicated, and I'd reccommend googling it:

Wikipedia says:
"Secular law in most western countries with large Jewish and Christian populations does not recognize polygamous marriages. However, few such countries have any laws against living a polygamous lifestyle: they simply refuse to give it any official recognition. Parts of the United States, however, criminalize even the polygamous lifestyle; these laws originated as anti-Mormon legislation, although they are rarely enforced. Polygamists may find it harder to obtain legal immigrant status."

I'd go with that; it seems like a pretty solid answer.
