Question Posted Friday October 26 2007, 3:25 pm

i think i may be bipolar. im happy one minute, sad the next, ticked off the next, and then fine the next minute. i saw this commercial, where u can get a packet online, and it will teach you how to treat it and everything. now, should i get that packet, and do whatever it says, or should i get professional help from a doctor?

thanks

a commercial cant diagnose you with manic bipolar disease. and the chances of you having it are super slim. usually not only will you be moody but you will have physical signs of bipolar disease. It sounds like what you have is just horomones, something EVERY girl gets around your age. plus being bipolar isnt what you want it to be. the meds are a hassle, and it can take over your life. go to the psychiatrist and see whats up. if you are bipolar a psychiatrist will be able to see it almost immediately and diagnose you with it. hope this helped.

Bipolar disorder does have ups and downs. However, these are usually stretched over weeks or months. So someone would, for example, feel extremely depressed for six months before feeling incredibly manic for another six months.

What you are describing sounds more like something hormonal. You are of an age where your body is producing higher levels of hormones, and this can mess with your emotional state.

Ways to help deal with this are talking with friends, writing in a journal, painting, etc.

However, if you are feeling like you can't cope with it, I would suggest speaking to your doctor. He/she could then recommend if you needed more specialist help.

See a professional.

Some stupid packet & website won't diagnose you with a mental disorder. Only a psychiatrist can do that.

Don't bother with the packet as neither something you get from TV or the Internet will diagnose or help with bipolar disorder. How would I know that? I've lived with the illness for five years now and know this beast inside and out.

Yes, bipolar individuals have mood swings and experience elation and then anger or depression without warning. However, those same symptoms are normal in teens especially girls during adolescence. For you, this may be all it is.

If you are experience extreme highs, lows, depression, anger, sadness and racing thoughts or inability to rest or sleep that's signs of bipolar. If you are having signs of dangerous or delusional thoughts or seeing things that's part of it too.

For now keep a diary of what's going on with your moods and share that with your parents. Bring it up to your teachers, counselors and family doctor.

Right now though there's not much you're telling us that would lead me to think you were in need of help from a mental health profession and or are bipolar. Granted you or anyone else could turn out to be bipolar in the end but the info here does not suggest that you are in that situation.

I think you should get a proper diagnosis first. No sense in getting that packet thing (I'm sure it's not free) if you're not even sure what's wrong with you, right? Sometimes mood swings are just mood swings, but you need to know for sure. If you ARE bipolar, you should probably still learn more about it before you go off trying a whole bunch of stuff.
