bateling anorexia?

Question Posted Wednesday October 17 2007, 10:44 pm

Some of my friends recently think that I am going to turn anorexic soon, or that I am already. They say I need to eat more. I think I am eating plenty. Here is what i eat usually... for breakfast I usually eat a special K bar, then for lunch I eat like and apple or a kiwi or some kind of fruit, then for dinner I will eat like a half of a half of a hamburger sized peice of meat and a small side salad. Do you think that this is enough? I drink water or vitamine water normally. They keep worrying that I am going to pass out at practice or something. I am a dancer and am at practice for 5 hours a day, so they keep telling me I am not eating enough calories in a day. What is your oppinion on this? Am I really anorexic or and ok? Oh yeah and also i am 5'7" and about 105 pounds and am a girl. Is that a good weight?

Okay.
For starters, anorexia is more of a psychological disorder than a physical one. If you thought you were fat at 5'7" and 105 pounds, THEN we could call you anorexic. If anything, you are very underweight. At your height a healthy weight would be about 135. You could gain weight (muscle weight is ideal) and still be fine.
But no, you are definitely not eating enough. I'm guessing that amounts altogether to under a thousand calories a day. Normally, people eat around 2000, people who are active get about 2500. You are a dancer, so you need to be getting AT LEAST 2000.
Don't try to jump up there right away though, your body won't be able to handle it. Work your way up slowly by maybe eating a little more often. Try to eat every three hours, even if it's just one thing.
Do yourself and me a favor, and keep a calorie log one day before you try to change anything. You can look up the calories in fruit on line if you don't know already, and if it amounts to under 1000, make some changes right now before you permanently damage your body.
Dancers need to be strong, and 1000 calories or under - dude, I'm NOT a dancer and I burn at least that every day. I work out, though, and I'm very health conscious because I used to actually be anorexic. (You learn a lot when you're trying to conquer eating disorders, lemme tell ya.)
You need water, water is good. Vitamin water is fine, juices are good. Protein is good. You can find ways to up your calorie intake once you find a way to eat more.
I really hope you turn this around. Good luck, and feel free to drop one in my inbox if you have any other questions.

"Underweight teens Being underweight also is linked to health risks, especially if it is caused by malnutrition."
Considering the amount of food you consume- it can result in fatigue, (weakness and it can cause you to faint), you can't concentrate as well and you get angered easily. If you are underweight, your immune system weakens (because of the lack of nutritions) and you won't be able to fight off infections or viruses as easily.
I don't think you are an anorexic, Anorexics deliberately starve themselves because they think they are fat. And you are not starving yourself but it is true- you need to eat more. You should check your height and see what kind of weight you fall under, try to meet that weight, if you do- you are just right.
However, don't eat fatty and oily foods, eat foods that are high in protein and nutritients, and since you have dance practice for 5 hours, you really should consume carbs in the morning, such as whole grain cereal and a slice of whole grain/ whole wheat bread, it really helps. As for dinner- you don't have to eat as much since after dinner, you usually don't go out and do cardio exercise, so you should limit your dinner but have more calorie intake in the morning so you use it up by the end of the day.

You aren't eating enough and you are probably underwieght.

Sooner or later, they are right, you are going to pass out.

You need to take better care of your body. If you plan on, or are, dancing as your career, it's worth it to visit a nuritionist who can give you advice on just how much and what you should be eating.

Start eating a full hamburger. Dancing takes lot of energy, especially when you do it for 5 hours a day. That's a dangerous weight for being that tall, actually. According to a BMI calculator, your BMI is 16.4 which is underweight. I would try to get to a BMI of 18.5 or maybe even 19 or 20. Just try to gain a few pounds because the way you eat could hurt you.
