Virus block?ˇ

Question Posted Wednesday October 17 2007, 11:42 am

I need you to tell me some good FREE virus blocks, and virus scanner programs. I have a good paid program..but the year is over, my dad hasn't got round to re-newing it..so I am quite worried about my laptop since there are no virus blocks, and I use LimeWire.

thanks!!

I second the vote for Avast, I have it now and it is wonderful. I tried AVG and Zone Alarm and both let viruses through on my computer, blech. Norton and McAfee just didn't seem to do anything.

For all that is good in the world, DO NOT USE AVG. It doesn't work well, and the virus guard doesn't work at all. Here's my antivirus comparison:

You can see that AVG did very poorly. I recommend Antivir or Avast:

For a spyware guard, use Spybot's teatimer, spywareterminator, or COMODO firewall's HIPS:

An antispyware isn't necessary if you use Avast antivirus or a paid antivirus.

Bad antivirus applications:
Norton (too bulky)
McAfee (too bulky)
Trustport (bad detection)
Microsoft (horrible detection)
AVG (horrible detection)
Forticlient (bad detection)
Dr web (bad detection)
F-Prot (bad detection)

Good antivirus applications:
NOD32
Antivir
Avast
Kaspersky
BitDefender(paid version only)
F-Secure
symantec (business edition only)

If you must pay for a security solution, I recommend NOD32, Antivir premium, F-Secure, or Kaspersky (in that order):

Try AVG, and to scan files use SpyBot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware. If you are willing to pay some money for it, try to use Norton 360. Works like a charm on my laptop, not a single pop-up or infection yet. Hope that helped.

Same happened to me last month. Mine ran out so I got AVG free edition. It works perfectly fine - it's as good as anything you pay for.
