Fees on babysiting a lot of kids

Question Posted Wednesday September 26 2007, 8:22 am

I babysitt for a small group at our church. What I do is, the parents, have the bible study upstairs, and I watch the kids downstairs. I do not have any help. I usually babysitt 13-17 kids each time. The age ranges from about 18 months two 8 yrs. Most of the kids are in the 3-5 ranges, with a few 6-8 yr olds, and two babies.
I babysitt for usually an hour and a half to two hours. I get paid around $30-$35. Is that too much? Too little?

Do you have any other adult with you? I don't think it is legal or wise to have that much responsibility for so many young children. The money is fair, but there should be at least two of you getting that amount for safety reasons.

I think given that you are babysitting for a church group to allow parents to take bible study, that is an adequate amount. I get paid to do the same thing at my church but not nearly that amount and I am an adult with 2, almost 3 kids of my own!! Many churches do not even pay... it is on a volunteer basis.

However, you may want to request... possibly get aggressive about getting more help. In most states it is illegal to have one adult for more than 5 or 6 kids and I am assuming that you are a teenager. You may just want to "cover" yourself. I would hate for you to get into trouble if something were to happen. You are completely responsible for up to 17 kids for up to two hours!!! That is literally TOO MUCH for any one person to handle. Could cause a bit of legal trouble.

most ppl get paid like $5 and up per hour.. so i would think that you would get a little more than that. like maybe around $5 for each family of kids per hour.

I think that is a perfect amount. If you watch that many kids all by yourself you should get paid that much and God bless you!!!

I understand what you're saying, but if you really think about it, you're only supervising half of the kids (the older kids). I'm sure that they just run around and play and aren't too much trouble to put up with. You have to realize that you're working for a church, and it's not like you're working at the commercial daycares like La Petite or Dinosaur Den. I work at my church and watch around 18 kids with another lady for 2 services, and get paid $40 a MONTH.

The price that they're paying you is more than enough.

If 30-35 is your total, I think that's no where near enough! You're by yourself with like 15 kids for crying out loud! Although it's only about 2 hours, I think you should earn a little more money than that. Maybe $40.00 total would be reasonable.
