Question Posted Thursday September 20 2007, 5:06 pm
How would I go about getting my parents to get me a puppy (a toy/miniature one)
I've been asking them for years (it's been 9-ish years now, I'm 16) yet they think up some excuse since my brother neglected his cat :(.

Since your parents are using your brother neglecting his cat as an excuse, tell them that you are responsible and wont abuse the dog. Tell them that since it is a small dog, that it wont take up a lot of room in the house. Also, if you take a dog from the shelter, it would be saving a dogs life {if the dogs dont get adopted, they get put to sleep :'(} Tell them that you will be able to walk it. (and since its a toy/miniature dog they usually dont need to be walked a lot) Since it has been 9 years, and your 16 tell them that you are old enough to handle the responsibility of owning a dog.
Hope I helped!! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wanted a kitten so bad when i was 10 that i asked one of my friends to bring one of her kittens to school and give it to me to bring home. I have to keep it in a backpack on the bus (poor kitty :[ )and when i got home, within a half hour my mom found her (dog and brothers sniffed her out) It was embarrasing getting caught. So never do that. Don't try that. I didn't have a good time with it. I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those medeling brothers and that little dog too! It was my mother who wouldn't let me have a dog and finally last year for my birthday my grandma bought me a dog and my mom was really mad. but within the hour she was okay with me having the dog and now my mom loves her.Now I am not saying to go and get one without your parents knowing just show them how bad you want it and how much it would mean to you. There are many reasons why your parents may not want you to get a dog. Talk to them about it. If they are worried that it is a huge responsibility, then prove that you are responsible. If they are worried about the price, offer to raise some money, or to help pay for the costs of buying it and raising it. If they just have a general fear of animals then research the breed you like extensively online, everything from what it needs to eat to which treats are the best to feed it when it does something good. For every excuse, do something that proves that the dog is a good idea, and more importantly, that you can handle it.
If all else fails, remember that in two years you will be eighteen with the option of leaving home, and will be able to buy a dog for yourself then. [ junebug93's advice column | Ask junebug93 A Question ]

Telling them wont do anything. Negotiate w/ your parents. See if they will allow you to have a gold fish or hampster. If you can show them that you are able to take care of that creature then make an agreement that at a certain date you can have a small dog. Be aware that owning a dog is a HUGE responsibility, it's not like owning a cat or any other animal. A dog (no matter the size) is like a taking care of child. Their always needing something. Though you may not be carrying the finacial responsibilities, your parents will. Buying a pure breed is exspensive, let's not forget buying the dog bedding, food, license, accessories, shots & any other vet treatments.
Take into consideration & really listen to what your parents "excusses" are. If you feel they are being unfair, negatiate. That's all a kid has when it comes to convincing an adult.
