president...

Question Posted Tuesday September 18 2007, 8:26 pm

okay so I'm running for student body president at my school. I have to write a speech and right now im just trying to get ideas but I'm totally stuck. So i was just wondering... what are some things in your school that you like? or dislike? or what are some things you would like to see? stuff like that. Because I just need some ideas then i can use some and put them into ideas for my speech or whatever. so if you could help that would be great!

Well, whatever you decide to say, just make sure it's something you can actually follow through on. I've heard a lot of speeches that promise to do things that the student council isn't even involved with or capable of doing! So before you write your speech, make sure you know EXACTLY what you can and can't do as president. Talk to the teachers or other students who have been involved with it, and ask them what sort of things they did last year. Then you can use those things in your speech, by saying something like: "Last year, the student council did blah blah blah; I will work diligently to make sure that this year is just as great, or even better, by doing blah blah blah."

Good luck!

You could say you will do your best to bring the student body together...

High schools and middle schools are often very divided in their groups of people(especially big schools) and it makes it hard to meet new people, and thus hard to understand them. People dislike what they don't understand - its human nature. Being divided can cause a bad atmosphere for school. Not only socially, but for learning as well.

You could set up special lunches where people who want to participate take a number and sit at the lunch table they were assigned to with other people who were assigned there. You know. That sort of thing, if you actually plan on following through with it. I doubt that would be something a principal would disagree with.

Ummmm...don't wouldn't promise things you probably can't deliver. Like new pop machines, longer lunch hours. The principal has to approve everything you do, being president doesn't mean you're really in charge. This means not promising anything that would put financial stress on the school, or screw with the budget. The principal will most likely say no.

and while I'm on money, you could say you'll organize fund raisers and fun events for students so the proceeds can go to money for the school. New desks, TVs, projectors, computers, electronics in general, and if you really make a lot you could get extra things that could be fun for students. I don't think anyone would object to that.

So there! :D I hope this helps.

My school has pretty much everything, so let me give you a few ideas based on what we have.

Clubs are always a good idea. After-school activities look good to colleges, and they can be fun too. Most schools have an Honor Society and sports, but maybe you could introduce the idea of student-run clubs. So like, if ten kids like writing and they got a teacher to sponsor their club, they could meet after school like once a week. If you don't already have this, you should really try it out.

Also, my school has a student-run cafeteria separate from the main one. All the food is from local restaurants and that cafe makes a LOT of money. This may not be easily done, but it's something to think about.

Depending on where you are, recycling is good too. All you need to do is get bins from a local collection center and bring them in like once a week or so. If there are a lot of environmentally friendly kids at your school, they will love you for putting in recycle bins or offering to. If you already have bins but only a few, get a few more!

Our school has barbecues on certain days to support one of the clubs. You could try organizing monthly barbecues, where all of the profit goes to putting something amazing into the school (like more sports stuff, a study room, a sitting area, you get the idea).

Those are all in place already at my school and everyone loves them, so I would give it a try. Just don't make any promises you can't keep.
