Even though tote bags are cute, your better off getting a regular bookbag. Jansports hold up really well and are in a lot of cute patterns. Heres the ones I'm talking about:

The polka dot ones are real cute, and I got the pink plaid one =]

Alot of people in my school use those vera bradlely bags, some use just regular backpacks, and some use messenger bags. It doesn't really matter. Personally, i like jansport backpacks with they gel-like stuff on the shoudler pads. You'll be carrying around alot of books, and i bet that the other ones look nice, but they would hurt your shoulders an awfully lot

victorias secret, and hollister,
all have pretty cute bags.
if your going into high school,
and you're gonna have alot of books,
then you'll want to have something you
can sling over your shoulder.
having alot of weight on your back
can make it hurt, alot.

I bought one of those big bags from Victoria's secret. A lot of people have those. (The messenger bag).
Anyway, I got a few more books than I expected and it's really heavy and hurts my back. So I am using an old bookbag which is a lot better for my back and doesn't make things seem so heavy.

If you don't have a lot of books or if you're load is really light then a messenger bag is nice. BUT, if you're taking a courseload that will have books and possibly quite a few supplies a bookbag is smarter.

They have really cute bookbags in Target, Kohls, and many other places.

I suggest paying the extra money and getting a jansport or a nice brand where it will last years and has a warranty on it. They make them nice and they should last through high school and even college.

I don't suggest a Wal-Mart bookbag just because the last 3 book bags I got from wal-mart were all big enough and all broke by the time I was half way or 3/4ths into the school year. The one I bought my freshman year was a jansport and it's my senior year and I still have it. The only problem is a slight tear in one of the straps but that's because my sophomore year I was wearing it and a guy friend jumped on my back and literally sat on top of my bookbag for about 5-10 minutes. It's not even a small tear, it's more like just a few threads that were broken. That's how you know it holds up well.

I'd suggest a backpack though, it'll work out better and they have really cute ones these days.

I had a cute messenger bag last year & I disliked it after awhile. Books can get really heavy & actually do damage to your back since it's all on one side of your body. Plus they aren't that big. For more comfort & room, I would suggest getting a regular bookbag in a cute color/pattern. You can get relatively cheap ones at Walmart & Target.

-hope that helped!♥
