Laundry

Question Posted Thursday August 30 2007, 11:41 am

My mom is gone on a business trip for 1 week and she left a couple of days ago, my dad is busy with work and my siblings are always with their friends... I spend a lot of time at home, since a lot of my friends are gone on vacations. Yesterday my dad told me to start acting more mature and helping around the house. Like doing the dishes and doing laundry. I can do the dishes but I'm not very good with laundry. So my question is,

- How do I seperate the piles.... Whites, colors and darks right?? ok but what about whites that have some color designs on them? Is it ok to wash colors that are not the same? Like blue and pink together? What about socks? My dad has socks that are white and gray. I know you wash towels and sweatshirts together right? does the color matter for those? I want to do laundry, but I'm scared I'll screw something up and my dad will be mad at me. I googled up laundry but there was only 1 good result, wikipedia and that was a little help. So any other helpful laundry advice?

heres how i do mine..

separate into 4 things, whites, lights, darks, towels.

WHITES; all white teeshirts, tanks, shorts, undies, socks, sweatshirts, basically anything plain white!! no off whites, or anything with something written on it. *use bleach if everything is ALL white

LIGHTS; light pink, blue, green, light grey, anything white with designs on it, bras, colored undies or socks, anything basicallly LIGHT colored!!!!

DARKS; blacks, navys, purple, dark grey, dark green & bright colors, such as bright yellow or pink. shirts, shorts, pants, pajamas, whatever!!! sweatshirts can also go in here

TOWELS; this is simple, just towels! NO BLEACH UNLESS ALL TOWELS ARE WHITE!

*** some tips
- dont use bleach unless everythings white,
- dont forget to hang up all clothes after washing,
- use dryer for towels, sheets, stretchy tanks or shirts, undies, socks, big sweatshirts, pjs and anything that WONT shrink!!!!

good luck!!!!!!!!

okay, here's how i separate mine:
pure whites (no color on them at all!)
lights (pastels, gray socks)
brights (those BRIGHT colored or strongly colored shirts, such as a navy shirt or a fuschia shirt)
it's really difficult to mess up bright colored clothing, but with the lights, make sure it's only like light colors (like a light pink shirt, or a baby blue shirt, or anything that's not a bright).
i normally do towels and sweatshirts separate, though i think it would be okay to do them together.
go ahead and wash the bright colored t-shirts because that is the easiest part. next, you can separate the plain whites (like undies, socks, plain white undershirts, etc) and wash those in warm water. also, don't forget dryer sheets, and make sure to fold or hang clothes right after you take them out of the dryer so they don't wrinkle. i'm sure your dad won't be mad at you if you are making a sincere effort :)

Whites go with whites, colors go with colors,if the whites have some color on them then put then with the colors. You could put blue, pink together as long as they are colors,it goes the same for socks. The same rule applies ro towels, sweatshirts.Lets say you were to use a detergent that doesn't have clorox you could mix up the colors but just in case always follow the colors rules.Never put delicate clothing into the washing machine stuff like silicon, silk because it will get ripped up.Also remember to check the pockets because it might have money inside or an important paper.

I'm sure its different for everyone- but this is how I do my laundry [yes, I'm one of the few teenage guys who actually does his own laundry].

Whites go together- and usually socks are included in this unless they aren't white. Tube socks are alright in this mixture. Don't use bleach unless everything in there is COMPLETELY white- not an off-white or white with red stripes.

Colors go together- but usually, I separate into each color- like Reds, Oranges, and Yellows go together [yellow can go with green also]. Greens, Blues, Purples, and Blacks go together. You don't want to have light blues and light greens in this load, so maybe do a separate load with just the light blues and light greens. If you have blue jeans that are dark and you don't want them to fade, turn them inside out. If you have a shirt with plastic lettering on it- turn it inside out. You don't want it to fade and melt.

If you have a stain on a piece of clothing, put some of the soap on it before it goes in the washer. Just a dab or two should be fine, if you rub it in a little bit.

Towels do generally go together, no matter their color. Unless of course you have like white towels and black towels together. That isn't a good idea. Beach towels and other colors of towels washed together are fine.

If you're afraid something will blend colors- wash it in cold water- preferably not in the washer. This is mainly for White and Red shirts.

If you need anymore information on laundry- or you have more questions- you can say in feedback- or ask another question to my inbox.

There's nothing good on the Internet because there isn't a specific way to do it. Everybody does it differently. Ask your dad. That would be the responsible, mature thing to do, which is what he's looking for! If you ask nice enough and act like you really wanna learn how, he'd probably help you with it the first time. After that, you'd know exactly what to do and he'd probably not get too annoyed if you still had questions. Good luck. :)
