I'm 16. Every time I go out, all the kids I see look chubby or overweight. I haven't seen a "healthy" looking kid in a long time. When I was younger, I remember that most kids were average weight.. but now.. it's changed. Is it because their parents don't care enough to give them a proper diet or what? Did computers/video games take over little kids?
- Parents don't have time to cook & make a good meal, so they order out or leave their kids money to eat whatever they want.
- It's hereditary. It can be in your genes to be overweight, so some people actually cannot help it, & it's hard for them to lose weight.
- Some people don't really care for their looks & are happy with who they are. And again, it really is who you are that matters, not how you look. Looks are nice to have, but they're not everything. :)
- New technology has come out & it's a lot easier to use that technology than to actually get up & do the exercise. Some kids aren't motivated enough to exercise.
It's just a lot easier to sit around & be lazy than it is to run around & exercise. It's not just parents sometimes, so you can't blame them. But if these kids don't wanna take care of themselves, then that's their problem & you shouldn't bring it upon yourself to make it your business. People are going to be overweight. Oh well! Fast food is very accessible these days, and video games are sort of a substitute for actually doing stuff. Instead of of playing football, you can pick up Madden '08 and drop some wideouts and tight ends with the click of a button. [ Matt's advice column | Ask Matt A Question ]
LOL_x0x answered Tuesday August 21 2007, 6:49 pm: First of all, this makes me so so so sad.
This also hits a soft spot for me, too.
Second of all, I think up09's answer was kind of rude and completely falsely labeled.
"nah it aint like that, most kids become overweight because one they have no friends and just sit around all day. or they are lazy, and all they like is video games. sometimes it could even be that they eat a lot but dontl ike to be active like playing sports. mostly tho it could just be that they are under a lot of stress and dont care about their weight."
While I agree that SOME weight gain can be caused by stress, I disagree with everything else. No offense up09. I just don't agree that the kids became overweight because they simply "didn't care" or "had no friends".
What I think is...
Yes, video games and T.V. took over.
But it wasn't only that.
I think it was a mixture of new technology, like the video games, also the internet, mixed with lack of excercise and more consumption of junk food. This doesn't neccessarily mean it's the parents' fault though. It started with the parents, possibly, but then the kid's made the choice and eveloped the habits of hitting the junk food or gonig straight to the video games rather than choosing healthy alternatives.
I hope this makes sense and helps you out =]
Jeanne answered Tuesday August 21 2007, 6:34 pm: Yes, it's true... a lot more kids are overweight these days. There have been a bazillion studies about what has caused it, and you are exactly right: it's all about diet and exercise.
Most Teenagers don't get much exercise, unless they're really involved in a sport. Little kids, of course, are almost always in some sort of sport, so they get lots of exercise. But a lot of kids quit sports around age 12-13, either because they're burned out, or because they've realized that they aren't going to be the superstar that they or their parents dreamed of. That's why you see people your age starting to get chubby, when they were pretty fit a few years ago. And it happens even faster for girls, because they have stopped exercising at the same time their bodies naturally begin to have more fat.
As for the diet - it's not that parents don't care. It's mainly because everyone is sooooo busy these days, they don't have time to prepare healthy meals on a regular basis. So they grab fast food or toss something in the microwave, and these foods are almost always high in fat and calories. [ Jeanne's advice column | Ask Jeanne A Question ]
viciousxpunk answered Tuesday August 21 2007, 5:47 pm: i have noticed that too. i think that in recent years movies, video games, tv, and the computer have become a larger part of childrens lives, which has substantially decreased their activity levels. also, schools have a lot of unhealthy food for kids to buy, and there isnt as much physical activity in the school curriculum anymore either. in some cases it is also due to parents not feeding their kids right.
