I am a trainer at a fitness center. This October I will be teaching a weight management class. Since January, I have dropped from 186.5 to 161.5 and stayed healthy doing so. In 9 months, you could easily do the same, if not more. Here is what I recommend:
First, get support. Having friends and family pushing you will keep you motivated.
Second, balance your workout. You need cardio to get your heart rate up to a good fat burning level (70% of max heart rate); strength training to build lean muscle (not bulky muscle, so stay away from serious weight lifting - light is ok), which raises metabolism; warm up to get your muscles ready; cool down to get back to normal and avoid strain from suddenly stopping; and end with a stretch to lengthen and retain muscle mass. Do this every other day. On the other days, focus only on cardio (take a walk, go dancing, go for a swim, etc.)
Third, balance your diet. Are you carbohydrate resistant? Many people are. I am not saying to cut out carbs. That is unhealthy. When I did it, I got irritable bowel syndrome. Sure, I lost weight, but I felt horrible. You need to limit your carbs. What you do have of them should be whole grains. These take longer to digest, keeping you full longer. They also have more nutrients, keeping you healthier. Eat your fruits and vegetables. The deeper the green or orange, the better it is for you. Have a balanced breakfast with one serving of whole grains, some protein, and some fruits or veggies. That will jump-start your metabolism for the day. Eat 5 times a day, once every 3-4 hours. Avoid junk (but treat yourself to a small treat every few days to keep motivated).
Fourth, keep track of what you are doing so you know what is working and what isn't. I found a great website that helps: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) You can keep track of what you eat and what activities you do.
Now, here is the basic calorie count for the diet plan that I will be teaching: Week one: 1200 calories; Week two: 1600 - continuing until you reach your goal, get sick of dieting, or stop losing; Final: 2000-2500 calories, dieting for no more than 2 days at a time as needed to maintain your weight. No more than 30% of the calories should be from carbs, 45% from protein.
First time I followed this plan, I lost 15 lbs in 6 weeks.
Good luck!

You could lose much more weight than you bargain for in 9 months if you're really into it but I guess it could range from 40-70+ pounds. But, it is better to set a goal for yourself depending on your height since you never stated it(for every 5 feet, 100 pounds, for every inch above that, 5 pounds).

The best way to lose weight is firstly, to eat properly, such as cutting out junk foods and high sugar foods and drinks such as pop. To do so, you could replace them with fruits, yogurt, cereal, orange juice etc. And instead of eating 3 larger meals, cut down to 5 small meals a day.

Secondly, you have to start doing cardio exercises, running, jogging, or walking for 30 minutes or more, atleast 3 times a week. If accessible, you could also go to a gym and use machines such as ellipticals, or threadmills. Also doing weights will help you become more toned in specific areas and aid in your weight loss, to start off, 5 pound weights would be good.

And remember, don't push yourself beyond what you can take because you'll end up hurt.

I'm gonna have an estimate of 50-60 pounds in 9 months. I'm not too sure, because I don't know your height and age. If you try as hard as you can, you CAN lose 50 or 60 pounds in 9 months. Try walking, swimming, and using the elliptical at the gym. (If you have a gym to go to.) Eat healthy and drink mostly water. Only have 1 glass of juice a day. The rest should be water. Don't drink sports drinks or Vitamin Water, because they're packed with sugar. Cut down on junk food--a lot. It will help you in no way. If you eat white bread, switch to whole wheat. Try eating Special K. You replace breakfast and dinner with it, and for lunch eat something light and healthy. Try, and feel good about yourself. You can't lose weight if you're stressed. Good luck
