Self inducing labor....any ideas?

Question Posted Friday July 27 2007, 3:40 pm

Ok, according to my midwife, I am in labor. But my cervix wont open, and my water wont break. I am in so much pain that I have been in tears for 4 days. I want to find a way to self induce. Some people have said have sex, but since she has dropped I am scared that will hurt her. Someone else said castor oil but I dont know where to get that....has anyone got any ideas on how to make her break my water? And please dont say "She will come when she is ready"

Okay, if you're using a midwife you're probably shooting for a natural birth, am I right?

My wife had a similar problem giving birth to our daughter. Her water wouldn't break, and the labor was unproductive (wouldn't dilate). We'd hoped for a natural birth using the Bradley method, but after 48 hours of labor, we gave in and started with Pitocin and an epidural. It turned out my wife's pelvic opening was too small to allow a baby's head through, and we had to do a Caesarean.

It's okay to change your plans. Your baby will not be any less beautiful if you use drugs to make things easier. Extended labor can put stress on the baby and cause complications later on in the birth. Ultimately, it's your body, you're the one giving birth, and your midwife has to do what's best for you. Part of what's best for you is making sure you're not in unnecessary pain.

As a direct answer to your question, orgasms will help induce labor, as will nipple stimulation. Use a breast pump to simulate a baby nursing, or just use your hands (or someone else's). :-)

When I was pregnant, they said Castor Oil was a big no-no.
Why? Because it works like a strong laxative. According to the information booklet my hospital gave me, taking Castor Oil can cause the BABY to have diarrhea. Their feces goes into the amniotic fluid, and the baby can swallow it or suck it into their lungs causing dire consequences.

Some people don't have their water just break. My doctor had to break mine. Your midwife should know how to do that. If not, better start heading for the hospital.

Castor oil is very dangerous to use. PLEASE do not
use it.

Talk to your midwife and make sure it is OK and then
walk. If you are dilated but just not enough yet
walk. Not alone, have someone walk with you.

Orgasms late in pregnancy can cause labor. You don't
really have to have sex to try that one. :)

The average age on this site is probably 13 or 14, and despite the fact that the world is turning to shit, they're not going to have anything useful to tell you.

Talk to your midwife or doctor; don't ask for advice from the little kids on this site. Any advice they have is likely untrue and could potentially hurt your and/or your baby.

Edit in response to feedback: Crazy idea, but if your midwife and/or doctor do not want to induce labor yet, maybe you SHOULDN'T try to do it yourself?

Have you asked your midwife? Your doctor? A nurse? Anyone who is actually QUALIFIED to help you? If you have, follow their recommendations, not any information you find online.

If you, or you child, are in such pain or in such danger, it's high time to get professional and personal help.

Please, call someone who can come and assist you in person, even if that means calling an ambulance. This is not the sort of thing you want to leave to chance.
