does out universe expand forever? or does it like.. end? im really interested in that stuff even though im only 13 so i dont understand alot about or solar system. what are some jobs other than astronomer i can do when im older too? or do astronomers get paid alot? i want a job relating to the solar system that gets paid well when im older. cause i have no clue what i want to be when lots of kids already know.. also yeah with my first question.. also whats the deal with black holes? so when you go in.. instant death? or you get transported to a different time or something? i wish we humans could know more.. and like whats a space time continuim(sp?) and do you believ in aliens and are there any clues to there being aliens or some kind of other organisms on other planets? THANKS! :)

-It expands forever. The general thinking is that this is very unlikely.
-It expands for a while, then gravity pulls everything in the universe back into one point, which turns into another big bang. This repeats forever.
-The universe expands so far that gravity starts to fall apart. Eventually, atoms are no longer attracted to one another, and everything turns to dust.
-Everything dies. Stars turn into black holes, black holes evaporate after a long time. Eventually, a new universe springs from nothing, which is possible in quantum physics. This is the most popular current theory, and the one I subscribe to.
Most things done by astronomers in the past is done by computers now. If you want to work with space-type things, look into engineering and quantum physics(a branch of mathematics).
As you approach a black hole, from your point of view the universe turns a bright blue and gets smaller, as if you had tunnel vision. Just before you hit the black hole, it would disappear and you would be billions of years in the future.
From the outside looking at you entering a black hole, you would turn a bright red and you would elongate, like spaghetti. You would slow down exponentially, so the closer to the black hole you get, the slower you're going. You would never actually hit the black hole, because by the time you reach it billions of years have passed and the black hole has evaporated.
This happens because as you approach the black hole, time slows down for you. You don't notice a difference in time. Things away from the black hole look like they speed up, things closer to it look like they slow down. Billions of years pass by in seconds. In reality, the radiation around a black hole and possibly the gravitational stresses would kill you before it evaporates.
I think there is extraterrestrial life, but that it is less frequent than commonly believed. Maybe one instance of life(not necessarily intelligent) every 4 galaxies. I don't think they've ever visited earth, I doubt humans will ever meet them; a galaxy is enormously big and far apart. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
mariahneu answered Monday July 16 2007, 9:23 pm: The universe is thought to expand forever, but we may never reach the "end" of the universe during our lifetime at least. There is a theory that galaxies and such expand and keep on expanding over time, and someday they are thought to "explode" because of the size of the galaxy being to massive and taking up too much room in our universe. It is thought, however, that we won't have to worry about this happening for billions of years.
For the astronomy jobs: Astronomers get paid about $100,000 a year. Astronomers are among the highest paid professionals, but they are also among the rarest: there are only about 800 astronomers in the entire United States. Astronomers are expected to get doctoral degrees in astronomy or astrophysics, and have a great knowledge of math, physics, and computers. Most astronomers work for NASA. Lots of colleges and universities offer courses on astronomy as well, so finding a school would be fairly easy.
A black hole is an object with a very powerful gravitational field. The region surrounding it, including itself, becomes cut off from the rest of the universe. How it works is the black hole basically "converts" any matter that goes into the black hole into nothing.
A spacetime continuum is used to describe the space and time in space by using a coordinate system. Spacetime is in 3D, while time is in 4D.
I don't think that aliens are real, because they would have most likely found some form of skeletal remains on a planet. However, evidence of water at one time has been found on several planets, I believe. But then again, I believe that there is an explanation for everything, but some explanations are still undiscovered. :)
orphans answered Monday July 16 2007, 9:13 pm: hey
i'm interested in this stuff to. i don't really know the answers to some of your questions, but i'll try.
i bet our universe doesn't expand forever only because humans are really small & like incapable of advancing our technology enough to SEE exactly how big space is. it's pretty darn big though. like.
approx 32 billion light yrs across at least. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
sweetie, to tell you the truth, astronomers don't get paid a lot. if you wanna make like at least $1 million a year, you'd have to get a major in law or business & work on wall street. i've considered that profession too. here's what you can do though. you can get a major in college with something that you're going to do as a profession & make money with, & a minor in astronomy.
i think that black holes are like a time warp. it brings you to another part of the universe. electrons [light] also get sucked into black holes & no one knows where they go. people can't go inside black holes cause obviously we'd die, but if we did, we'd probably be transported to another part of the universe.
i wish humans could know more too, love. i always thought humans were so underdeveloped, frankly. i mean, three fourths of the world thinks that there are no aliens. that we are the only living beings in 32 billion light years of space. oh yeah, explain crop circles to me...
yes i totally believe in aliens. not the stupid ones like in SIGNS (really bad movie), but like ones that are wayyy more developed than humans. there have been soo many UFO sitings... they have to be real. [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
Glitch5000 answered Monday July 16 2007, 9:07 pm: Alright so here's the most common theory (because it isn't really proven) The universe expands forever and never ends. Our solar system is just a tiny insignificant thing inside the universe. Astronomers get paid fairly well, and I'm not sure of other jobs that have to do with space.
And black holes, when something goes in, it brings it to another area in the universe. So yeah it's kind of like teleportation.
A space time continuum as it's spelled is the bond between space and time.
And yes, I do believe in life on other planets, because I read that there's another planet that's been found that's capable of sustaining life.
Glad I could help. [ Glitch5000's advice column | Ask Glitch5000 A Question ]
