It depends on the type of person you are. You have to be really patient and not vengeful (for lack of a better word) because people can be jerks. Often people won't leave tips or will act very rudely, and you have to smile and ignore it.
You also should have a good memory, most places have at least their tables numbered, and most of the time the seats are numbered or lettered, too. If someone says, "Bring this to 5 C" you need to know where that is. You have to remember to check on people, and being a good multitasker helps.
For the interview, wear a nice blouse or shirt (not low-cut, better too modest than making a bad impression!), nice pants (not jeans or khakis), and close toed heels or flats. Straighten your hair or put it up, wear natural makeup (no black eyeliner), make your nails look nice with a light or neutral color. Smile and be positive.
Good luck! ]
My friend is a hostess at a diner similar to Denny's [and I realize your interview is at Applebee's]. Anyways, she hates it.
You stand there waiting for people to come in, some people give you a hard time, and you don't make much money. You'd make more as a waitress because of tips.
Anyways, wear nice clothes. Don't wear ripped jeans, don't show cleavage, don't wear flipflops. Wear a nice dress shirt, a nice skirt or dress pants, and nice shoes. Do your hair nice & your makeup natural. Don't look sloppy & come in confident & smiling. When they greet you, shake their hand, & tell them it's nice to meet them. Keep your answers short & sweet UNLESS you feel it needs to be a long answer.
Good luck at your interview! ]
I was a hostess. Personally I hated it. You sit there and seat people all day, with a fake smile, and those damn vibrating glowing squares. Its always your fault that there is no seats available. You answer phones, while getting scolded for the wait, while some kid spit on your menues making all of them unsanitary, and sticky. Although I am not a people person. Wear khakies, and a dress shirt. No point in getting too dressed up.... ]
