i have heard the term burnout used in two ways. a burnout is sometimes considered to be the people at school that do drugs and are high all the time, more commonly referred to as burners, or the bums in their late 20's to late 30's that dropped out of high school, have a bad job or no job, have no social life or any life at all, and basically have done nothing worthwhile, ever.

Somebody that went nowhere in life. Didn't accomplish any goals, and basically just sits around, doesn't have a job, and can't support themselves. A loser. Probably did a ton of partying/drugs, or still does, and lives with their parents at the age of 35.

If someone is a burnout, it means they dropped out of high school, or quit their job & now they're 30 & live with their mom's playing nothing but computer games & studying chemistry privately with a chem set from Wal*Mart.
