Sterotypes

Question Posted Wednesday June 27 2007, 10:56 pm

So. Why do people sterotype people again?
All Preps aren't obsessed with the color pink
All Jocks aren't stupid
and
All Homosexual guys don't dress nice, act like a girl, and write poetry.

What is up with sterotypes?

Jeez.

people like fitting into a catagory sometimes. it's a whole lot easier than thinking for yourself and stuff.

We live in a small minded society. That is a sad fact.
You just have to strive to be above such actions. At least you are one more open minded individual in the world, right? That counts. It really does.

I'm a blonde, and have always got a rash for it. It used to bug me that I was graced with such a stereotype, because they say blondes are dumb, air-headed, slutty idiots (etc, etc, etc, etc...) I don't fall under any of those categories. I just have blonde hair.

But, people who think I'm stupid based solely on the color of my mop on top generally tend to have it come back and bite them square in the ass. ;)

I know Preps aren't obsessed with pink (in my day it was those alligator polo shirts they were supposedly obsessed with...). I know Jocks aren't stupid. I know Homosexual males don't do all that flowery stuff you mentioned.
They are all people with their own unique personalities, just like anyone else, and that's how it should be. And you know that as well as I do.

So like me, you can be above stereotyping, and above letting those shrunken heads get you down when they stereotype you.

Hope that made some sort of sense to you. :)

It's just part of human nature to stereotype. Our brains are designed to organize and catagorize information, to help us make sense of the world. If it has four legs and barks, it must be a dog. If it has four legs and meows, it must be a cat.

It's also sort of a primitive survival instinct. The caveman sees a snake; he knows some snakes are poisonous, so he stays away from this one, just in case. Or he eats some red berries that make him sick, so from then on he avoids all red berries.

We apply this to people, as well. Some "xyz" people have hurt us in the past, so all "xyz" people must be mean or dangerous. The sports teams from "abc-land" always win, so all "abc" people must be great athletes.

Of course, just because our brains work this way, doesn't mean we're always right! Some "xyz" people are really nice, and some "abc" people are probably total klutzes. But that primitive part of our brains makes us put people in catagories, based on our past experience or things that we've been told.

Ohh you know, the typical people who judge too fast, need something to put you in. when people don't like you, they'll call you a "poser" "prep" "emo" "loser"(anything they don't like.)It's mostly in the middle school days, but now its getting worse. Also, whats up with people asking how to be these things? Do they really want to be something they're not? Yeah, thats another one. Most people who label themselves want to be that. Most people who label others expect them to be that. I compleatly agree with you, no one is the same and yet everyone decides to (try and) make it that way. Originality has gone to the dogs, well, most of it.People say "hollister?oh,you prep. hottopic? EMO." Well, wtf, what if someone wears both? What do they do now? Easy.Make up another thing to put them in. Stupid people=p. But yeah, what everyone else said, almost everyone labels sometime in there life. (labels are for soup cans, not people.hmmm,i woouldn't be surprised if the person that made that up was a steriotyping fiend.)(i just steriotyped,i think)Swears are steriotypes too, kind of. But not really. Its the "prep, emo, goth, scene, banana, monkey, whatever." That gets me. Is a bunch of bullshit if you ask me. Thats whassup. ♥

ps.- sorry, this probably made no sence at all.oh well.

Because it's a way of "fitting in" or sorting people out & making it clear to see where you stand. Or to just say something about someone.

Like S_C said, it is most definitely human nature to label. Everyone does it; even people who hate labels. I hate labels, but I judge people most of the time. It's not usually by how they're dressed though. It's on what they say & how they act. If they come off as annoying, I tend not to hang out with them.

Stereotypes are all based on opinions & stupidity. Someone had an opinion a long time ago & it evolved into stupid people. Honestly, everyone does it & it's just to seperate yourself.

I'm brunette -- I'm not booksmart. I'm German -- I'm not a Nazi. I'm Puerto Rican -- I don't eat rice&beans constantly. I'm Native American -- I don't have a reservation or jump around fires hitting my mouth to make noises. And I'm also Ukranian, but I don't do whatever the stereotype for Ukranians is.

Honestly, I don't mind when people stereotype me though. Look at this way -- if people are THAT dumb to judge you by what you wear or how you look, then why would you want to be friends with them anyways? But you've gotta face it. Stereotypes will always be around. There's no way to get rid of them. Not everyone is going to be open minded about this topic, so it'll never change.

its wrong to judge people but sterotypes are there because the majority of them are.. kinda right. doesnt mean its right to like place people into little groups, but when you you see someone really girly and stuff you think of them as a prep when they actually could act like a jock or something. thats why its not good to judge someone before you even get to know them.

S_C answered Thursday June 28 2007, 12:19 am:
I'm not saying that what I'm about to say is morally right, or even correct, it's just my opinion.

Even though a lot of people don't mean to stereotype, it's human nature to judge people.
A lot of us don't even realize we're doing it.

It's the same as people saything that blondes are dumb, brunettest are smart, and redheads are sexy. It's the same as saying cheerleaders are ditzy and lesbians are always "butch".

Even though I think it's wrong to judge people, I don't doubt that I do it every day. I try not to because I've been on the negative side of stereotypes and I know what it feels like. Even though I say it should be easy to just not judge, it's one of those "easier said than done" types of situations (to me, anyway).

Can you honestly say that you've never judged anyone? I'm not asking this to attack, just to prove a point. We're all human and imperfect, making mistakes every day. One of those mistakes is stereotypes. Unfortunately, although most of us know how wrong it is we do it anyway.

I admit that as much as I try not to, I can't help but judge people. Opinions change over time. People realize that not all preps love pink and not all jocks are stupid, etc. It just takes a while. Even when they realize that they still have something/someone else to unfairly judge. Like I said - human nature. It's not right (morally) but it's the truth as I see it.

By the way, I LOVED this question. People need to be more aware and try to control their stereotypical behavior as much as possible... at least I do.

EDIT!!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm the one who approved it. I saw it and loved it =D. A bunch of the other admins probably aren't around - it's about 12:30am where I am.
