i've been wondering about this.. i mean im a kid myself, 13, and like i see all these older people that complain about little things they dont like about themself. those people go on to makeover shows, shows where they change their wardrobe and stuff (what not to wear), and even get plastic surgery. now im really against plastic surgery.. unless for medical reasons, but anyways im wondering why kids cant say they are ugly in a way, too. adults think its soo wrong when kids say that when they do it too! and why arent there any kid/teen makeover shows too? i mean i think theres some for teens, but why not preteens or people around my age? that would be cool.. and some people dont think thats right, then why is it right for adults to do it too? now im not saying plastic surgery or anything for the kids, but like.. you know makeover stuff that could improve their confidence and stuff.
its really annoying in other ways cause like theres no tv shows about kids my age that arent like cheesy or anything. why are they so cheesy? and why do they all wear make up when not alot of kids even use make up that much. like in hannah montana.. their make up looks so professional.. yeah like any kid that age could do that everyday. and in that and other shows they always have alot of different cool outfits and stuff when thats not really how it is in real life.. well for some people but not alot of people. why are tv shows like this? i watch some of them anyways but if something different came out i'd like it. oh and the show on MTV called Made, why is it only highschoolers. i'd like to see an episode with someone from middle school or something.. and more shows about middle schoolers than high school high school high school. blechhh.
i guess these are 2 seperate questions... whatever. thanks for answering! =]]

Erinn_the_bamf answered Friday June 22 2007, 7:59 pm: The reason adults flip out when teens and preteens say they are ugly is because they don't want them to loose confidence. Lack of confidence can turn people, espically teens to drastic measures, such as eating disorders and worse suicide. I know you're thinking "We're not that stupid!" but during the teen years the part of the brain that affects judgement reforms itself, therefore, we don't think before we act. Also fun little hormones are running around our brain making the slightest comment feel like it's the end of the world. As a result, adults sugar-coat everything about the apperance of teenagers as to keep them from being depressed. Also, everyones a hypocrite, so they think they can say that they're fat.
TV is chessy because the media sucks. They try to make everything glamorous. And baby, life ain't always too glamorous. Furthermore, most TV shows are so issue of the week. The problems are usually solved in a 22 minute period, not including commercials. Which brings me back to the media. They try to make everything look sparkly and perfect because it sells, which makes them money. Which makes them simply dandy.
Jeanne answered Friday June 22 2007, 6:01 pm: Question #1: Why is it okay for adults to say, "I don't like the way I look and I want to change", but not okay for kids to say that?
Well, I think that's because adults want kids/teens to feel good about themselves the way they are. Most teens go through some period when they're unsure of their appearance. It's normal, as our bodies change, to wonder if we look normal or if we're attractive. To make things worse, we compare ourselves with the models and actresses we see in the media, and we think, "If I don't look like that, I must be ugly." So adults try to reassure teens that they are normal and attractive the way they are. And that you don't have to be a supermodel to be pretty. And that there are more important things in life than how we look. Sooooo... if an adult says to a teen, "Yes, I agree! You could use a makeover!", they think they will be sending the wrong message. They want to tell teens, "You look fine the way you are, you shouldn't be so worried with how you look!"
Well, obviously, not all adults have gotten that message themselves. And when they complain about their own appearance, they're sending the message that looks ARE important! They're kind of being hypocrites, aren't they?
But I actually agree with you. I think there SHOULD be makeover shows for kids and young teens. Just telling someone, "You look fine" or "Looks don't matter" isn't going to make them feel good if they really don't believe it. But if you can do something that will actually make them feel more attractive -- makeup tips, fashion tips, etc -- why not do it?! That goes for adults, too. If changing the way you look will really make you feel better about yourself, I say, go for it!
Question #2: Why are TV shows like that?
The people who make the TV shows make things that they think a lot of people will want to watch. (The more people who watch the shows, the more money they can get from advertisers.) And apparently, a lot of people like to watch things that aren't "real", so they can live in that pretend world for that 30 minutes or an hour.
The trouble is, a lot of people start to believe that what they see on TV *is* real! They think everyone is beautiful, skinny, rich, lives in a nice house and has an awesome wardrobe. They start to think that's normal, that *everyone* has those things. And if they don't have those things themselves, they think there's something wrong with them... or they feel sorry for themselves... or they knock themselves out working 3 jobs so they can have all those things they think they *need* because the people on TV have them.
It sounds like you're a lot smarter than that! You've already realized that the things on TV are fake. Good for you! Keep up that attitude and keep questioning these things. Maybe you'll be able to help change how other people feel. [ Jeanne's advice column | Ask Jeanne A Question ]
Depressed_Poet answered Friday June 22 2007, 5:12 pm: I know, it's crazy. After all, ADULTS are setting an example for us and we're the future. If we think of ourselves in a bad way, the future will be a wreck next generation -- but it's not our fault -- not theirs either, really. I'm not against people who get it, but I'm against the action itself. I think they freak out when they hear we have low self esteem because we're so young and we don't even know who we are yet, that if we're in this mindset now it'll just get worse. But, we wouldn't think this if maybe the adults had a positive attitude about themselves. We look up to the adults, they help us in the world. No, there are no make-over shows for kids because we've barely filled out our looks and it's unhealthy at such a young age. They put make-up on Hannah Montana because it's T.V. -- and they do that to babies too, so you can relax about that -- it's just show biz. I put on just as much make-up as she does, but I think it's really the level of skill and patience someone has to get it to look the way they want. They put HOURS of make-up on Hannah. But notice, in magazines where they show pictures of Miley Cyrus there isn't nearly as much make-up on her as there is on her in the show. MTV won't do middle-schoolers probably because of a contract, and that channel is mostly viewed by highschoolers. It's nothing against us. I know, we're aliens, right? But trust me sweetheart, if you don't understand my answer now... it will come together.
Much Luck. [ Depressed_Poet's advice column | Ask Depressed_Poet A Question ]

peebles7 answered Friday June 22 2007, 5:07 pm: well, first of all, I guess I agree, there is sort of a double standard. It hink that the reason there are makeovers and plastic surgery for adults and not teens is for a couple of reasons. First of all, teens are still developing so plastic surgery would be unsuccessful and lead to problems, and teens are also growing so they don't want to redo the whole warddrobe and have the girl/guy grow out of everything!
also, as you grow up you'll realize that adults are more able to put their flaws into perspective. For example, a grown woman might think she had a big nose and has been dealing with her self esteem all her life and has decided to have plastic surgery, but on the other hand, she could reach 40 and realize that it's not worth the risk, and she is beautiful despite this flaw!
teenagers are much more influenced by their friends and the media, which is why so many more teens than adults have eating disorders and depression due to appearance. That is why parents hate when their kids say they are fat or ugly. They want the younger generations to be happy and successful as adults, and if they are already worried about being ugly at 13, they are going to be focused on their flaws instead of being the best person they can be despite this! I know you find it frustrating, but it's a good thing there is no extreme makeover for 13 year olds, we teenagers need to realize there are more important things in life than whether we have as clear skin or pretty hair as our friends, you know? People that are able to put this into perspective end up much happier.
As for the question about highschoolers vs. middle schoolers, it's all about the audience. MTV and other networks create shows to please the people that watch their network in order for them to make money, and there just isn't as high a demand for shows with 13 year olds, than 16 year olds. In a couple of years you will be very happy that you don't turn on the tv and see all these middle schoolers getting "made" and stuff.
I do agree with you though, shows that feature middle schoolers really are cheesy, like the disney ones and stuff. This is only because parents would object if they saw a tv show with 13year olds talking about sex, that's the truth. There is a big maturity difference between middle schoolers and high schoolers. You seem like you are very mature for your age, but most middle schoolers aren't, and that is why the "real" shows have high schoolers featured.
Michele answered Friday June 22 2007, 5:05 pm: Well, you might not believe this, but we adults, think that all kids are beautiful. WE see your young fresh faces, unwrinkled skin, bright smile, and we are envious. And we wish that we liked ourselves more when or appreciate ourselves more when we were young. We think you guys are just lucky to be young, and should be happy with that. And another thing.....we all wish we could go back to being young again. So my advice is to enjoy being young while you can. You see what we look like as we get older, you see the all the work and the responsibilities we have. So just enjoy being young. Because you will get old just like we did, and you'll look back on when you were young, and wonder why you didn't think you measured up. When you are much older, you'll understand why adults don't recommend make-overs for kids. I mean experimenting with make-up and hair styles is OK and it's fun, but make over's that require surgery can be dangerous. The surgery I mean, so most medical professionals won't perform non necessary surgery on children. It may even be against the laws in your state.

barbiegurl111111 answered Friday June 22 2007, 4:55 pm: i think that adults worry about kids when they say that they have body issues because kids are still in a developmental stage! and if they start to worry about little things that truly dont matter it might liead to eating disorders or even worse!
and i guess with the TV issue the tv shoes need to have kids wearing makeup because under bright lights it fades out your skin and you would look sickly without make up but they do try and make it look as natural as possible
and MADE uses high school students on their show because the main audience on MTV is kids in high school! :)
