18 is the legal age, however, at least where I live, there is alot of leniancy. I am 16 years old and my close group of friends and I love adventures. Recently we went to a hookah bar where my friends have been going for months (it was my first time) and we got in no questions asked. It was a very relaxed and exotic environment. Anyway, my point is, although I cannot recommend that you go before you are of age, I can tell you that many do go, myself included, and if you conduct yourself maturely and unobtrusively there will more than likely not be any problems. Hookah itself is a water bong containing tobacco, and to use it, you inhale the pipe through your mouth, then exhale and blow the smoke out in fantastic ways. You can order your hookah in different flavors and it is usually around $10 a bong. I recommend not staying over an hour or two, at which point you might start getting woozy. Enjoy!

Obviously the person, lbwhite89, who answered your question has no idea what hookah is. Hookah is flavored tobacco which is smoked through a multi-stemmed, often glass-based, water pipe. You have to be 18 to get into a Hookah bar (or lounge as some call it) because it is tobacco and in most, if not all, states the legal age to buy tobacco products is 18.

A hookah is a water bong, from which one smokes flavored tobacco. It's actually pretty bad for you, but that's only because when you smoke hookah, you tend to smoke for hours. The tobacco's wet - it doesn't burn up and turn to ashes like cigarettes to. On the other hand, it's a little better for you because it's JUST tobacco, which is a plant. There aren't any added chemicals or carcinogens like there are in cigarettes.
I believe you need to be eighteen to smoke hookah in public.
At a hookah bar, they will pack it for you, but I'll go through the steps anyway:
First you fill the bottom with water (or juice, for some extra flavor, but I don't reccomend it). If you want cooler smoke, put ice in the water. Then you put the hookah together. The bowl on top is packed with flavored tobacco (personally, grape and mint are my favorite flavors), and covered with a piece of tin foil. The foil has a bunch of teeny holes in it to help give the tobacco oxygen, and a charcoal is lit and set on top of the foil.
The charcoal heats the tobacco, which is where you get the smoke.
To smoke it, you'll have a long hose with a plastic tip on it (to prevent germs, etc). Put simply, you close your lips around the plastic tip and inhale. Hookah smoke is very gentle - if you've ever smoked a cigarette, hookah is nothing like it. I'm a singer and I was able to have a voice lesson the day after I smoked for hours with my friends.
Just make sure you have water, your throat/mouth can get dry.
