I'm getting a physical soon, and i need a blood test. Do they stich the needle into the vein? If they do, don't they hurt?

Do they stick the needle in the wrist? Or where?

ANd also, if they stuck the needle into your vein, wouldn't your vein burst??

Can blood tests be done near the shoulder..like where the shots are done?

1. They do stick the needle in the vein, usually around the elbow area. If you hold your arm straight, in the inside of your elbow you can usually see blue veins... that's where they do it.

2. It hurts, but not a lot. They use a thin needle, and it's not that bad. I had to have a bunch of blood taken for a medical study I did last year, and that entailed having blood taken up to 10 times a day.

3. No, your vein won't burst. It's not under high enough pressure. The tubular structure of the needle allows any pressurized blood to enter the syringe.

4. Absolutely not. You'd be sitting there forever! They take, on average, 3ccs of blood (at least). That's 3 mL. You can't get that much very fast from your shoulder, and it would hurt a lot more.

My suggestion... just close your eyes and wait until they're done. The more you stress over it, the worse it'll be.

Just to add to everyone else, my veins in my arm are hard to hit, so they generally go from the veins in my hand.

It doesn't hurt, it just feels kinda strange. But it's nothing to be alarmed or worried about.

Honestly, to worry over a blood draw is the same as making a mountain out of a mole hill. I was scared the first time I had it done, too, but it is nothing like what you are thinking, I promise. Don't look and all you'll feel is a bit of pressure that feels kinda strange, but not painful.

Oh, and as everyone said, your vein won't burst, but if they happen to go nuts and poke through the back side of your vein, blood will leak out under your skin and cause a bruise. But that doesn't hurt, either. Not that it's going to happen to you, but just so you know what's going on if it does happen.

I've had it happen to me before a couple of times, but that is because I was stuck in my elbow where my veins happen to be hard to hit.

So no more worries, ok? You will realize after your physical that it is nothing to fret over.

I have to get my blood drawn a lot. I have an under active thyroid and every now and then they insist on making sure I am getting enough of my medicine. If it is not right then I will sometimes be getting my blood drawn every 3 weeks until it is right.

They do slide the needle into your vein. They don't burst. No, they won't take it from anywhere near your shoulder. They will take it from the inside of your elbow. If you don't look at it while they are doing it, you hardly feel it all. Shots hurt worse than a blood draw does in my opinion.

I know what you are going through because even though I KNOW it doesn't hurt, I still get a bit anxious just thinking about it. But really, it will be fine. :)

Hi.

Generally the only place to get blood is via a blood vessel or vein and no, they don't really hurt at all. The needle they use is very fine so you probably won't even realise they're done till they tell you they are done. :] However, some people are extremely sensitive to needles and would feel a bit of discomfort, it really depends on the person. Generally though it doesn't hurt, it's more like a little pinch.

No, your vein wouldn't burst. :] I've never known this to ever happen to anyone before at all and these people who will be conducting your physical will have done this exact same thing countless times over, they will know exactly what they are doing so you've nothing to worry about there.

The impression I get is that you seem nervous about the blood test. Seriously, there is nothing at all to worry about. When you go for your physical feel free to ask whoever it is that's going to take the blood test about it and exactly what they will do and what will happen. If you feel nervous about it just tell them you feel nervous about it and just want to be assured it's perfectly safe. They will explain it all to you. :] Generally blood samples are taken with newer updated methods and not the common syringes. Again, when you walk into there feel free to question them and ask them about it. It's their job to inform you on exactly what they are doing and what will happen. :]

Ah, blood tests. Last time I had one I fainted afterwards-- I felt light headed. But it was odd, I've had blood drawn a million times and it only happened that once.
What they do, is put this rubber band time thing tightly around your arm, slightly above the elbow and tighten it until it almost stings. When you straighten out your arm [usually it's the left one.] you can see a little blue vain right on the inside of your elbow. They poke a small needle in there and get as much as they need.
To see how bad it'll hurt, touch a needle or safety pin to the tip of your finger. Barely press down. [just enough to feel it]
It's about that hard.
Your vein won't burst because of the tight rubber band thing they put on, and plus, they'll put a little cotton swab on directly after they take the needle out, and you'll bleed about three drops out [more or less, doesn't matter. it's never much] and then your blood will naturally clot itself. :] Simple as that.
