If you found the dog curled up he's unlikely to have died from choking on something, or in pain. It sounds as though he passed away peacefully in his sleep. Due to his young age, it's possible he had a congenital problem that hadn't been picked up on.

Let his family know as soon as you can, so that they don't come home to find him like that and see what they want to do. You could take him to their vets as they may be able to find some clues as to the possible cause of death.

I'm so sorry that this happened and I hope you recover from the shock soon.

Ignore the person that implied you neglected the dog. If you've taken care of it, he died of natural causes, and it's unfortunate that it happened while they were away.

Try to call them and let them know ahead of time. Ask them what they want you to do about it.

I'm really sorry =/

call them if you can and tell them what happened, remember everything you did that weekend, did you feed it right, give it water, leave anything around it could choke on? If you know you didnt do anything to harm it, then it must have been a health problem and it's not your fault. Tell them what happened and even if you forgot to feed and water it the whole time the dog probably wouldnt die so he probably had something wrong with him. When they come home tell them everything that happened and let them know it was from a natural cause, they will believe you and not blame it on you at all.
