In most babysitting classes, they will teach you basic knowledge about babysitting babies through the age of 11ish.
In most classes, you will also get certified for CPR.
Then when you start looking for jobs, parents would probably feel more assured if they know that you took a class and know CPR.
And as for being shy, you could have your parents ask the other parents :]

But since I felt weird just going up to the parents and saying "By the way, I babysit, just thought you should know..", I got my mom to talk to their parents and casually slip it in. Now I babysit for one of his friends once every other week.
As for getting information, it's really not as hard as it sounds; once you get a job, the kids will usually have something planned for you to do with them, or if not, suggest a board game, puppet show, etc.

Also, many YMCAs and city park districts have babysitting classes where you also learn CPR and other helpful stuff. As for getting started... if you're too shy to approach the parents yourself, ask your parents to mention to the other parents that you're available for babysitting. You could also make a flyer to pass out at games and in your neighborhood. Good luck! [ Jeanne's advice column | Ask Jeanne A Question ]
