Ways to get to sleep?

Question Posted Saturday May 26 2007, 8:18 am

I live in Australia =]

I'm finding it really hard to sleep at night. It takes me like 4 hours to get to sleep no matter how late or early I go to bed. It only happens on school nights and I HATE MY SCHOOL WITH A PASSION. I also had no troubles sleeping in Primary school and my first high school

So any suggestions on how to get to sleep?

Drink milk before you go to sleep because it has some stuff in it that makes you tired and read too. They both make you very tired. I have the same problem, I'll sit there and think about the most random things for like 30 minutes to an hour, but I can't help it. So just try what I said and I hope it works!

try reading before bed. i used to do that all the time. maybe even consider going to bed earlier than you normally do, and try to be asleep by the time you would normally get in bed. Also, try taking a shower at night using relaxation soaps and lotion. (you can get them at a bath and body works if you have one there) Try even sleeping with a cover over your eyes. i hope i helped...good luck!

p.s. school will be out soon too, right? so try to start fresh next semister if this doesn't work for you now.

It's stress. I used to have this all the time. Especially if you just changed schools, that can put a lot of stress on you.

Unfortunately, no doctor can help you with this. You'll have to find something that relaxes you, or something to think about that makes you happy. So here are some of my best ways to fall asleep:

1.)Create a "ritual," on school nights. Go on the computer for an hour, do homework, brush your teeth, etc. It sounds silly, but your body needs to know when it should fall asleep. if you do the same things in the same order every night, then your body will soon learn when it has to go to sleep.

2.) Think Good Thoughts. I've laid in bed many times just worrying about the next day or the next week. You have to stop yourself when you start to worry too much. You should try to stay positive. Think of all the things you have- safety in your house, loving family and/or friends, a bed to sleep in. Yes, it sounds corny. But if you think good thoughts, you will become more relaxed.

3.) Go to bed at the same time on school nights. It sounds like you've been trying to go to bed at different times to see what works, but the best thing to do is pick a time and try to go to bed at it every night.

4.) Relax your body. When I had a lot of trouble sleeping, I would lie in my bed and whisper to myself, "My foot is relaxed and ready to go to sleep. My leg is relaxed and ready to go to sleep..." Then you do that all the way until you get up to your eyes. Make sure to relax each muscle, or try to picture yourself "sinking" into the bed.

5.) Find your "special" place. Think of a place that makes you really happy. If you don't have one, make one up. Anytime you close your eyes, you can go to that "place." I always try to imagine a nice beach. Then I close my eyes and I try to describe that place in my head. "The sand is beneath my feet. The water is warm and foamy tickling my feet..." Every time I make up a story like this, I fall asleep usually instantly.

6.) Another thing you could do is find some good smelling oils or lotions. Sometimes they make special "sleeping" or "night-time" oils or creams, that have nice, relaxing smells. Look for something that has Eucalyptus or Lavender in it.

:]

everything the person below me said is good, but heres something that worked really well for me.

ok, the scent of lavendar is calming and helps you sleep. either burn lavendar incense or a candle in your room before you sleep, or do this: take an old tshirt and cut out a square of cloth; about six inches by six inches. get lavendar essential oil and put a bunch of drops on the square-- not too much that it feels oily, but enough so that you can smell it, well. then put the cloth ontop of your pillow, under your head. it helps you fall asleep.

ok here is a list of suggestions that I have used to get to sleep:
* go to your doctor and get prescription sleep medication
* get a book of relaxing yoga to do before bed
* drink warm milk or tea before bed (uncafeinated)
* DON"T eat chocolate or drink coffee or soda before bed
* read a couple of pages of a book before trying to sleep
* Don't watch tv or go on the computer right before you go to sleep
* After 20 minutes of not being able to sleep get up and pace the room and move around a little and then try again
* change schools, the reason you can't sleep is because you are very stressed out about the next day, that's the real problem

goodluck!
