I'm trying to broaden my horizons and find some Metal bands that appeal to me.From what I've heard it all sounds too similar and the singers always sounds like they're being savagely raped and/or having their balls slammed between a door. The closest I can get is doomy stuff like Black Sabbath and whatnot.
However, if you like the darker Sabbath type thing, you should be looking more towards Goth, Symphonic, and Black metal. Its a little hard to distinguish the boundaries of each category these days, but here are some suggestions:
Nightwish: Symphonic/ Goth. About as good a vocalist as they come. She was really something. Very dramatic style of music.
Theater of Tragedy (the early albums up to Aegis)
Tiamat
Moonspell
My Dying Bride

Opeth is a death metal band. Their lyrics are beautiful, almost like poetry. Their vocal style is that death metal kind of roaring, but with really nice singing mixed in. I love them, and I'm not a metal person.
One of their less metally songs... great voice! [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Something more hardcore (live, so it sounds a little different from usual): [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Rammstein is really fun. They're German, so the music is, needless to say, not in English. Terribly catchy, though.
My personal favourite by them: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
