Your hymen is where your vaginal opening is and it's basically a little string of membrane that goes across. The opening is wide enough for you to put a tampon in but not break it. However, it may be broken from some vigorous sports.
There is a likliness that your hymen is broken either from getting fingered or from gymnastics. If you've had a little bleeding there when it wasn't your period, there's a chance it's broken. Next time you go to a gyno, ask... [ ductape_n_roses's advice column | Ask ductape_n_roses A Question ]
eclair answered Saturday May 12 2007, 10:32 pm: Hi, your 'cherry' is your hymen, it's a thin membrane of skin just inside your vagina which has a hole wide enough for menstruation to pass through, but is usually broken during sex for the first time. However, some girls don't have a hymen at all, and others have what's called an elastic hymen which doesn't ever break.
If you do have a hymen it can be broken during really physical exertions, and yeah it could happen in gymnastics - you'd probably feel it though, and experience a little bleeding. It could also break while being fingered - but again, you'd probably feel it. However some girls don't experience any bleeding or discomfort at all!
Basically, I wouldn't worry much about whether your cherry has popped, will pop, or even exists. It's an old-fashioned approach to determining virginity which is very innacurate. If it's still intact, it means you may feel a little pain or discomfort during sex for the first time - but if you are ready (i.e. sufficiently lubricated and turned on!) you probably won't even feel it, and will enjoy sex anyway. I know I did.
Hope I helped! [ eclair's advice column | Ask eclair A Question ]

It usually breaks because it's been torn, or so all my health classes have said. But some women aren't even born with one, so you never know.
