ok well i was doing a scan..and most of the files infected came from the cookies...how do i clean them and if i clean them...does it remove the infections? cause like every site i visited had an infection .... thank u :)
The odds are that you are running LavaSoft's AdAware, which reports all tracking cookies as problems.
If you are running something else, it would be helpful to say what spy ware scanner you were using when you got these results.
Before I forget, I would like to agree with the person below that SpyBot Search and Destroy, is a great spyware program. You should get it, and use it alongside whatever else you use now for removing spyware from your computer.
In whatever program you use, there may be a way to disable scanning of cookies altogether. I just ignore them, but if that bothers you, you could try to stop it from scanning cookies at all.
Cookies do NOT contain viruses. They are just little bits of text that the website you are visiting uses for things. Some sites use it to track what pages you go to, some sites, like ours, use it so you can stay logged in without having to put your username and password in on every single page.
Someone below said to delete all your cookies... That is bad advice. Any site where you logged in and said "remember me" or "keep me logged in" will no longer know who you are until you log in again. When you log in again, it will set the cookie again to help you stay logged in, so what is the point of deleting them?
For whatever this is worth: I have been in computers for over 20 years, and I don't delete all cookies. EVER.
To recap: Cookies aren't dangerous, as a rule.
They can be used to track you from one site to another, but that isn't what most sites use them for.
theymos answered Saturday May 5 2007, 4:13 pm: Cookies aren't much of a threat. Don't worry about them. They're tiny bits of text, and it can show advertisers which sites you go to, but it doesn't allow them to steal your personal info or ruin your computer. Every time to select "remember me" on a login form, it's saving a cookies. Th banner ads at advicenators probably leave a tracking cookie. If you want to delete them(which will log you out of every site), go to tools>internet options. If you use IE7, click delete on the general tab. If you use an earlier version, click "delete cookies". For firefox, go to tools>clear private data, make sure cookies are selected, and click "delete private data". [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
