sleep!

Question Posted Monday April 30 2007, 12:46 am

I'v heard it's unhealthy to sleep too little and too much. However, that's all I do... I go to bed really late on weekdays and wake up really early. I've become so use to it that I cant help it even if I try to go to bed early. On the weekends, I can sleep for about 12 to 14 hrs.. If i wake up, I close my eyes and just sleep longer and longer and I can do this all day. How can I start going to bed early, when Ive tried so hard already and I just CANT fall asleep... I literally just stay lying in bed, eyes closed, for hours...Until the usual time I go to bed which is like 1 or 2 am. I'm not going to take any sleeping pills or anything like that. First, is it true that it's bad to sleep TOO much? And, how can I make it a routine of sleeping more on weekdays?

I won't really repeat what these guys have been saying, but It will hep you to get into a normal cycle of sleep if you do this. Go to bed at the same time every night (or at least within an hour of the same time) and don't let yourself take naps during the day, even if you ARE tired. Soon you will be able to sleep closer to a good time. Don't study on your bed. It should be a place for sleep, so your brain will get into the sleep mode whenever you climb under the covers. While you are laying there, try to clear your mind of all those rushing thoughts by thinking of something nice (and not something that stimulates a lot of thought) like a cloud, or the ocean. That should help you to relax.
Good luck!

-Sleep plays a significant role in brain development. Sleep helps maintaining normal levels of cognitive skills such as speech, memory, innovative and flexible thinking.

-Lack of sleep has serious effects on our brain's ability to function. If you've ever pulled an all-nighter, you'll be familiar with the following after-effects: grumpiness, grogginess, irritability and forgetfulness. After just one night without sleep, concentration becomes more difficult and attention span shortens considerable.

-With continued lack of sufficient sleep, the part of the brain that controls language, memory, planning and sense of time is severely affected, practically shutting down!!

So, how do we sleep better?

* Exercise regularly. However, try to avoid exercising just before bedtime because that
may actually make it harder to go to sleep.
* Finish big meals at least three hours before going to bed
* Don't use your bedroom for other activities such as studying, working, or watching T.V.
* Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine in the late afternoon and evening.
* Create a bedroom environment that is comfortable for sleeping and keep it cool, dark, and free of noise.
* Read a relaxing book or listen to soothing music before getting into bed.
* If stressful thoughts or problems are weighing on your mind, write them down so you can put them aside for the night.
* Take a warm bath.

Everyone's different with their sleep requirements--age is a factor, work/school and active life style is a factor and sounds to me like you have an over active brain.

It won't shut off to allow you to sleep.

One or two things to remember, no chocolate or caffine (including sodas) after 7-8pm, as these cause brain stimulation as does smoking.

Try reading in bed awhile and see if that doesn't slow your brain down enough to allow you to sleep.

Go to bed at the exact same time every night regardless. Listen to soothing music or get a sound machine that plays ocean sounds or whatever.
It's a "white noise" that drowns out silence or excessive sounds in the house or outside. It helps the brain think of nothing actually.

Sleeping too much is a sign of depression and sleeping too little is a sign of over active brain. Which can be AHDD (hyper disorder)...

Try to chill, try exercises, yoga, reading, any and everything to stop your brain!

Many people have problems with their sleep. First thing they do is consider themselves some short of mental diseased and name themselves isomniac.
My opinion is that there is no such thing. Every person has some energy inside his body he needs to target somewhere. If you dont target that energy of yours on...work, obligations, hobbies...then you cant sleep at night.
Do you think that if someone is working like a dog all day long, that he can stay up till 4 o clock at night? (Dogs dont work but...whatever looool!!!)
Anyways, you should take up a new habit like ca hobby. Maybe get into sports and all. Why dont you start playing Football? American Football that is. It is good for you and chicks go crazy over such guys.
In case you are a woman you could start playing tennis or dancing. You know how guys go all crazy about tennis girls right? And dancers of courses.
And most of all, it is good for you and your body.
pimp is out.

I've heard this as well. But i know sleeping too much is the problem because your metabolism shuts down when you sleep. When your up and about and doing stuff its good for your body. It keeps your body in shape. If you feel your not getting enough sleep. Try wearing your body down doing alot of activies throughout the day, or even exceriseing before bed. Even a warm glass of milk or a hot bath will make your body comfortable and want to sleep. I'm glad you are not choosing to take pills. That should always be the last resort and if and when it comes to it. A half of a pill can make you get that sleep. Hope it works out for you. =]
