How to give advice

Question Posted Sunday April 15 2007, 12:44 am

I find that I am full of things to say and write, yet I never feel I give good advice, and I am almost lacking in critiqueing (sp?) skills. I have alot to say but I feel I am just hurting myself by not starting to give advice or at least make attempts to critique pieces of artwork.

where can I take a start to begin giving some advice, I want to get better and eventaully be able to verbalize exactly how I feel about a particular piece (even though a large part of me will almost always see and understand what is going on, I take a subjective view and can just "understand")

any advice? :-P thanks ahead of time

I may not have the best rating, but I like to think that I give good advice (even if it's not always appreciated).

I try to write from the heart. Use your own experiences to both sympathize and come up with a solution.

Stay ethical. Even if it means a low rating, give the right answer.

Don't be afraid to stir things up a bit. If everyone is saying one thing, but you really feel that the person should do something else, say so!

Back up what you have to say. Have a good reason for your opinions, and they can't argue!

Good luck!

Get a column here if you don't have one.
But realize, that just because someone rates you down and thinks you give bad advice doesn't mean that you are.

I just tell people the truth. Most people seeking advice are teens, and I just tell them exactly what I would tell my own son when he reaches that age.

If you understand where they are coming from, you can share with them your own experiences, what you did right, what you did wrong, etc. Or if you haven't experienced it, you can tell them what you would do if in their shoes.

And, when you give advice, don't cut them down and call them names or be rude- here or anywhere else. Like I said, advise them like you would someone you care a lot about.
