1. Getting involved:

Join stuff. High schools have lots of clubs. Into chess? Knitting? Environmental issues? Intramural sports? There were clubs for all of those and a lot more at my school, as I'm sure there will be at yours. If there isn't one in place, see if you can start up your own!

Talk to people. The first day is a great chance to get to know people before they have a chance to build a bias against you. Try talking to the people around you, introduce yourself and tell them you're new. A lot of people like to make friends with new people.

2. Joining sports:

Try starting up a new activity this summer. Yoga, tai chi, softball, or even just jogging or pilates at home are all great ideas. It'll help you get in better shape to try out for sports in the fall.

A great way to get involved with sports is to do intramural sports at lunchtime. My high school had them all the time; things like dodgeball, badminton, handball. We even did an American Gladiator-like game. It was really cool and fun without the really competitive edge. Plus, it gets you an in with the athletic crowd.

do you have a friend right now that would excercise with you during this summer? if so, excerice with her! it will make it alot more fun and keep you motivated, and then you will feel better and look better in the upcoming school year, and you will have confidence. also, once you get to your new school join any club that you have interest in, because you will make friends easier since you have the same interests. if you are switching to a private school, dont worry, alot of people will be in the same new situation as you. good luck joining clubs and making friends!
