science project research

Question Posted Thursday April 12 2007, 3:38 pm

k im in 9th grade and im doin a science fair project. this is my first time doing but i think i can do it all on my own. one problem is my teacher gave 4 deadlines and i only did the first one. the other 3 were about getting research and putting it all together "in your own voice". i dont really get that. he says we can't just read the research and summarize it, he thinks its a form of plagirism. so can anyone give me an example of taking your research thats about your project and "putting it in you own voice?" my topic is battery energy by the way anyone know good sites where i can find research on batteries or battery energy?

While I don't know anything about battery energy I can tell you lots about writing in your "own voice". He's 100% right that even if you have research from the Internet or other source you have to attribute it to the person who wrote it and or the place you saw it originally or it's plagirism.

If you stuck something in your piece that was from someone or somewhere and didn't say where the research or quotes came from you're done like dinner. In colleges and universities they'll kick people out for it inadvertent or not.

So what can you do? You can still take the information but rather than copy it directly into your piece you have to say "According To X" ths fact is so etc.

What he wants you to do is lok up facts on your own an if you use them attribute them to the source or use the information and re-write everything in your own words and style of writing. That isn't plagirism because you aren't stealing somebody else's exact words. That's all he's talking about.

He wants it in your words, your style and to know what you think and have discovered and not what someone online or in a book or newspaper article thinks or you copied. So, he is in fact right but you'll learn a lot more doing it the way it needs to be done.

Trust me, you don't wan to be busted for accidentally or intentionally lifting quotes or words or sentences someone else came up with into a report. The penalities will be severe and nobody who does this is ever trusted again.

Just to demonstrate how big a problem ths is even with research famous journalists have been caught for doing it as have writers and in a few cases these eople knew they were completely ruined anddecided to end their lives.

Your teacher is doing an amazing job aout teaching you about plagrism and all the ways you can get caught even if you accidentally did it by not attributing research or facts to someone else.

Batteries store energy chemically, and give out electricity to be used. The first battery was the Voltaic pile; it was made by Alessandro Volta in 1800. Batteries are an important industry, accounting for $48 billion in world-wide annual sales.
