eye infection?

Question Posted Thursday April 12 2007, 1:44 pm

Hi. This morning, as i was in bed, i tried rubbing my eyes, and my right eye, really hurt. so after a few hours, i got up, looked in the mirror, and there was some sort of yellowish-green thick liquid, on the edge of my eye, and my eye was slightly red and runny. there is also a tiny little spot on the edge of my eye, that hurts also. My eye hurts when i blink, or look around. is this an eye infection, or something worse? will it get better with eyedrops? thanks.

The eye irritation you're experiencing is probably not due to allergies, as that would affect both eyes. The yellow-green discharge does suggest infection. The tiny spot on the edge of your eye could be a stye, which is a viral infection, or something else. Pretty much the only way to find out is to go to a doctor. They can diagnose whether it's viral or bacterial and treat it appropriately. Over-the-counter things probably won't help. You should go to the doctor because eye infections can affect your vision, permanently. You shouldn't take chances with your eyes.

Meanwhile, don't touch your eyes. If they're driving you crazy itching and hurting, don't rub them. Take a cool, wet cloth or paper towel and apply it to your eye with your eyelid closed. Your eyes also drain to your nose, so be careful when blowing your nose and wash your hands afterward. Wash your hands/sanitize with hand sanitizer A LOT. :)

Best of luck

It could be pink eye, or the spot on the edge of your eye could be a sty. Pink eye will go away in a day or two with eye drops. A sty could be 24 hour thing or it could get bigger and you could need surgery to get rid of it. I would suggest using eye drops and showing your parental, assuming your adolecent, and maybe got to a doctor if it doesn't go away in a few days.

Since your concerned enough to ask Im going to assume this yellow green liquid is not your usual morning eye crust. because this yellow green liquid is thick it's practically another way of saying pus. skip the eye drops and hit the docs office. chances are you have an infection. the tiny spot could be an infected sore or nast bug bite.

there's 3 things it could be.

1.) pink eye - which can be treated with eye drops

2.) allergies - also treated w/ eye drops [the yellowish-green liquid is from soemthing either your allergic to or it's pollen from outside or dust..]

3.) something worse

but i highly doubt it's something worse.
go to the doctor as soon as possible and check it out just to make sure

but usually all eye problems are healed with eye-drops

half of it's telling me it's allergies because of the pollen n stuff outside.

you might have scratched it while your sleeping to!

just go have the doctor check it out and you'll be fine!

I'm no doctor so I can't tell you what you have, but I can take a guess. The only eye thing I know of is conjunctivitus (sp?) also known as pink eye.

You can read some of that and see if that could be what you have.

For now I would soak a washcloth in cold water and let it sit on your eye. Whatever you do don't touch that eye and then touch the other, especially not before washing your hands! Even if it's not pink eye it could still be contagious and you don't want both eyes to get it. Eye drops should help, but you may be better off seeing a doctor to check on what you have and getting prescription drops so it'll heal faster.

So when you get the chance I suggest seeing a doctor. But a cold compress may help. That's what I do when I have pink eye. I leave a wet/cold washcloth on whichever eye has it.

So even if you don't have pink eye (which is why you should go to the doctor, to see what's wrong)the cold compress may help.

To answer your questions though, most likely you have an eye infection, and it will eventually get better, possibly with drops. Your best off seeing a doctor because nobody here can be sure of what you have without actually checking you out.
