wow the same thing happened to me.. my computer would load up but there was no icons or anything, just the background. so what i did was do alt, ctrl, delete to get the task manager and then i pressed on new task and typed in desktop and it loaded. but sometimes it didnt work for me so i typed in system and that worked also and then my desktop loaded normally

Don't format your hard drive. LagunaBabe is completely wrong. Go to task manager, then file>new task, then type "explorer", without quotes. This should either give you your desktop back, or give you an error with more information.

This usually happens when an important file is corrupted. I'd try these things if "explorer" doesn't work. You can contact me for more info, or search the web:
-system file checker
-system restore( C:system32restorerstrui.exe )
-safe mode
-msconfig>diagnostic start
Good luck!

What programs have you been able to get to so far? Also, what windows version are you using?
When you had last shut down the computer (before your icons and start bar vanished) what had you been doing and how did you shut down your system? Did you do a normal shut down or was there a system crash or any other kind of errors?

I've had this happen to me a few times but a simple reboot into safe mode had fixed the problem after which I had booted back into normal mode.

Is your mouse pointer still working when it gets to the desktop? If so then you may have inadvertantly hidden your icons on the desktop by accident in which case you could try right clicking the mouse to bring up the menu and selecting 'Arrange Icons By' and ensuring that the 'Show Desktop Icons' item is ticked.

I know a lot about computers and I'm afraid your hard drive is wiped completely out. Meaning, there is nothing on your hard drive. Which means, you'll have to format your hard drive and put everything back on.

I'm not sure what type of computer you have, but if you have recovery disks -- use those and it will ask to format your hard drive, and click "Yes."

Or if you have something like, "Max Blaster" you can format your hard drive with it. If you do not have any cd's to format your hard drive with, in order to get your computer to work -- you'll have to take it to a place where they fix computers, and they'll format it for you.
