running

Question Posted Monday March 26 2007, 9:19 pm

Okay so this is for any good runners...how do you run long distance? what do you think about, and how do you overcome the pain in your lungs and chest and the throw-up feeling in your stomach? see because at my school we have to run a little under a mile, and that may not seem hard but the people who lead the runs run pretty fast. and theres this one hill that's just killer... so i was wondering if you had any tips for not stopping and just going the whole way through? like what you think about, breathing, what kind of stride, etc. ANYTHING will help!

Breathing is important - in through the nose and out through the mouth helps a lot but does require some getting used to. Also keep a steady pace. For long distance I have seen many people sprint away at the very beginning only for me to see them struggling a lot further down the line. This is because they burnt a large amount of their energy right at the very start only to be left with nothing but reserves further on.

Try and keep a steady pace and try to concentrate on something else - anything else that will keep you preoccupied. I usually have my MP3 player when I run as it lets me concentrate on music and the musics beats/tempo helps with the run. Another thing I would suggest is practice. If you have time for preporation then run distance timing yourself each time, every day. As you do it more and more you will see you are getting better and better at it and its becoming easier after which you may choose to increase the distance. Hope this was some help. :)

This might be odd, but when I go for runs I sing a song in my head and every stride is like a beat. Its really relaxing. ALso i have a breathing pattern, like in threw the nose out threw the mouth. Then my breathing is also like a tune and I use that as a beat (like with strides so it matches up with a song stuck in your head). TO get over the pain, just picture all the great things you feel when you know you've over come something. Also, just keep runing because it feels so nice to just stop then walk it off. Running relives so much stress. I hope this helped
