fear of throwing up

Question Posted Wednesday March 14 2007, 10:33 pm

My worst fear EVER is throwing up. I can't listen to it or see someone throw up, or throw up myself without crying. And whenever someone feels sick I avoid them. My brother has been in the bathroom throwing up for about a half hour now and I locked myself in my room and started crying my eyes out. I am 13! I thought if you face your fears you can get over them, but when I throw up myself and face it, it doesn't help, just makes me scared I'll throw up again and I refuse to eat for the rest of the day.

I don't like it either. I'd see a doctor.

You are suffering from a psychological condition (read phobia) that millions of people have. It has an actual name Emetophobia. The good news is there's support for it. There's a whole community on the Internet of people supporting each other with various degrees of it as well as FAQs and tips.

This site here [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) has all kinds of resources and book recommendations. If you and your family search under emetophobia online on Google or Yahoo you'll find oodles and oodles of information.

My tip to you is to do what you have done by removing yourself from the area where the other person is vomiting to calm down and relax. Think of something pleasant, play music, watch TV etc as that indeed works. I had the same problem as you do.

When it comes to vomiting yourself you need to know that it's natural and the sound etc and act of vomiting is okay. It cannot harm you at all. Although it's unpleasant know that it has to be done in order to feel better. Actually, the longer you cry, try to hold it back etc etc. the worse it's going to be and the longer it will take.

I had to learn to just let it out as for years I had this issue until I vomited every day for a week straight awhile back when I had a problem. The first thing to do when you feel like puking is to get green tea or cranberry juice into you. Gatorade also is good. My doctor told me this and it cuts down on the puking as it soothes your stomach and you can go about things normally.

Also if you are vomitting a fair deal have someone go to the drugstore and by Gravol pills which are aailable without a prescription that will make it so no vomit can come up your throat no matter what.

If you seem to get sick and in this situation a lot you ought to visit your family doctor. There's a prescription drug they can give you that you can take 30 minutes before eating twice a day and or when you think you just can't be free of it.

I hope the link helps you as you are far from alone. The tips I gave should help you as you did the right thing by leaving the area where your brother was. Just remember about the pills, beverages etc as well if you find yourself feeling sick.

The biggest thing you need to remember is to know it's okay and you won't get hurt or die etc if you need to do it. Always, always. always let it out as if you cry, or try to hold it back it will be ten times worse an experience.

It is normal for people to stop eating for the day after they throw up. Eating right after you throw up could cause you to throw up again. I know this from experience.

I'm not sure what your question is, so I'll assume you want to know how to handle your fear better.

To be quite honest, no one likes being around throw up, and no one likes to throw up. It stings your throat and you feel helpless. However, throwing up every few years is a part of life.

There's no way to be fearless of throw up. Everyone I know is grossed out by it and doesn't like to see it or hear it coming out.

I do think that crying was a little overdramatic. Throwing up is not life-threatening (unless done frequently). It helps get bad things out of your system to keep you healthy. When your brother was throwing up, he was actually getting rid of unhealthy material in his stomach, so if anything you should be rejoicing.

Vomit is gross, you've got that correct.
But it isn't something to be afraid of.
It's actualy helpful if you think about it, I mean throwing up is in a way cleansing your system.
There is nothing nice about it, but it isn't harmful.
You don't have to face your fears, but I suggest you look inside yourself and think about WHY it scares you so much.
Is it because it's repulsive?
Because it means you're sick?

Once you find that answer you can begin coming to terms.

I used to be afraid of big rainstorms, and getting abducted almost to the point of hysterics, but I thought about why I was afraid or what caused me to be,and I can tell you I have no fears at the moment.
