You become one when your class graduates highschool. The person with the highest GPA. Salutorian is second in the class, by the way.
Many grading systems (if yours is computerized) calculates class ranking after each marking period (like after report cards) and you can have an administrator check your rank. My school uses iPass, so if your school has that, chances are they also have the class rank feature.
