Mom My friend Haley's mom is elderly. Haley says that every time she asks her mom to clarify something her mom jumps down her throat. Haleys mom tells Haley you are going to send me to an early grave. In addition her mom gets mad at Haleys sister as well. Haley wants to know any suggestions on how to handle her mom and is this normal for her mother. Her mother is 82.

In all reality, we can't tell you for certain if this is normal. What can be done, is Haley can go talk to her mother's doctor if she has concerns about her mother's well being or mental state and try to find out what is best for her to do for her mother.
I can tell you that the woman is 82 years old. She has lived a long life, and it's probably been a hard life as well. I can honestly say if I live to be 82, I would probably get a little testy and impatient, myself. ]
0o There's a reason people go through menopause...
wait, is Haley 18+? ]
This seems pretty normal for an aging woman. Her mom is quite elderly, and that is an age where lots of women start to become more easily irritated and often controllive. I have a grandmother that is like that. It may have something to do with just generally getting older and more cranky, or it could be certain health problems. Perhaps her mom feels very old and maybe that is what bothers her. Also, if there are any problems in her life, she might take out her anger on Haley.

You also should talk to a doctor, they will know more than any of us can tell you.
Tell Haley to talk to her mom also. Staying calm is the key in this situation. If Haley's mom flips out on her, tell her to say calmly, "Mom, I'm sorry. But I'm doing the best I can, please don't get angry at me." Also, I find that any crying/lovey dovey stuff works too. Perhaps she should try to spend more time with her mom too, to improve the relationship. ]
