URLs are made up of several parts:
-http:// is the protocol, when writing a URL on a website, ALWAYS INCLUDE THIS
-stuff.com is the host, you should always include this, and don't forget the .com
-/things/bla/picture.jpg is the path. The final part of the path should always end with .something. If it doesn't then you might get a "forbidden" error or it will show a directory. Here are some examples.:
1: stuff.things.com
2: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
3: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
4: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
5: stuff.com/things/stuff
6: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

1 and 5 shouldn't be used since they don't include http://. 3 and 5 might might also give you a "forbidden" or a directory. The rest are fine. Also, don't include "www" in your URLs, all sites will work without it but some won't work with it.

You might be forgetting the file extension. If you're trying to post an image, the URL should end in .jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp, or a similar extension. If not, you're not linking to a valid image file.

It depends on what type of code you use.
Most message boards want you to use codes like:
[img]www.fdsfsda.com/fdsa/misconception[/img]
while the html code is
<a href="www.fdsfsda.com/fdsa/misconception">
And some websites don't support image embedding so instead of having the picture, only the url will show. For example, advicenators doesn't allow pictures in questions so it will just show the URL.
