My cat is going to be put down

Question Posted Saturday January 27 2007, 1:30 pm

I've had my cat for 10 years and I love him, but he suddenly started growing this tumor. And the poor thing probably won't live more than a few weeks but we don't want him to be in pain so we're putting him to sleep when he starts showing pain. I don't know if I want to be there when he is. My mom said I could go, but I don't know if I would want to see him then, but I don't know if I'll regret not going? Help?

ok well it will be really painful for you to watch him die but. The cat is just like a friend to you and you dont want it to die without you there to be with him at his last moments. i had the same problem and thats what my dad told me. If the cats your friend you should be there for him when he needs you so his last moments arent all that bad..im sorry if i didnt help..
thats pretty much the same speech i got and well it really helped me i hope it helps you!! :)

If you really love him, it's important that his last moments are with you, and not in the hands of strange vet.
I know what its like to not be there when a pet is put to sleep, and I wish that I could have been there.
I strongly suggest that when the time comes, you are with your cat as a comfort and support to him.

i was in the same situation with my dog a couple years ago. she got sick really quick but it was almost if it happened over night, so they told us we had to put her down or she'd need a blood transfusion for any hope to live over night, and that was the day we brought her in, so we put her to sleep. it was soo hard but i know that i would have very much regretted not being there with her. its a nice comfort to them to be around their families, and ironically it does sort of ease you too because you get a kind of "closure" i guess. so if i were you id go, so you could get in those last few minutes with him. yeah its very hard and i started bawling the moment they took her back, but its better to be with them than at home. good luck and best wishes <3

It's good that you don't want to let him live in pain. Not everyone can make that most difficult decision.
I have been in this position many times as I used to take in old cats that no one else wanted. I will be facing it again soon I think, as I have a darling cat that is nearing the end of her days.
I always stay with them so that there is someone holding them that they know and love and that loves them, as they slip gently away. It's one of the hardest things you ever have to do but it's the last thing you can do for them.
There is no right answer to this. It has to be your decision as it's you that will have to live with it. Will you be able to cope without feeling guilty if you don't go? If you do go, will you be left with a memory you can't deal with? Try to think about both of these outcomes and see if one rests easier with you than the other.
I'm so sorry you have this in front of you and wish you all the best with whatever choice you make.

I haven't been in this situation myself, but i know ALOT obout pets. Now i would go, but if it gets too much for you i am sure you can walk out and get some air. This is a good thing to do if you love him (i am sure you do, as you said)
