Always stay on the ball of your foot while walking, no matter the surface. This keeps your balance perfectly, as long as you can hold it. However, I do have some suggestions on different surfaces.
Boardwalks that have the bits of seeping, where the heel can easily fall through the cracks -- Always stay on the ball of your foot, and walk directly in the middle. You have to do it the supermodel way, one foot in front of the other. :)
Grass -- Again, always stay on the ball of your foot and one foot in front of the other.
Now, to what can be the most difficult...dare I say, stairs! Walk sideways, meaning, your feet turned to the side. Rather than walking straight. While staying on the ball of your foot, and you should be just fine. [ LagunaBabe's advice column | Ask LagunaBabe A Question ]

Moop answered Thursday January 25 2007, 10:25 pm: always always always walk on the balls of your feet when dancing or going up stairs in any kind of heels. it'll make it so much easier to balance and get around gracefully. it's how the tap dancers do it. Tara66 answered Thursday January 25 2007, 10:25 pm: Well you should have broken them in like worn them around your house for a couple of hours to get used to them. But if you couldnt then i get it :). You just have to be very careful like dont run or anything..walk smooth and slowly and concentrate. Walk with your toe hitting the floor first too not your heel. Walking upstairs will probaley be hard but your just gonna have to work at it. The only time that you most likely will fall or lose your balance is when your standing still for a few minutes or so.
