Quitting Smoking

Question Posted Monday January 8 2007, 12:21 pm

I am a smoker. I plan to quit.

A high percentage of smokers gain weight when they quit. I am already overweight, and am trying to loose, not gain.

So, my question is this:
What can I do to keep from adding extra pounds?

Please, if you don't have an intelligent answer, don't bother wasting my time and yours.

Thanks

Substituting one habit for another usually works better than just giving something up. Try to make a whole new plan and lifestyle around a healthier habit. Join a gym and you will be able to sweat out the impurities in your body quicker and lessen cravings, while getting into shape and burning off stress. Drink lots of water and eat oranges, which naturally clean nicotine out of your body. Good luck, but you don't need it, you just need to want to quit poisoning yourself.

Hey...you know Ive been on the CQ patch now for 8 weeks, I started with 21 mg, now I'm on the 14 mg, then it goes to the 7mg, I tried to quit "COLD TURKEY" that made me irrateable, and "yes" I started to eat more..but what I did, with this patch, when I felt like I wanted to smoke I chewed gum,and I carry a tin of altoids, I started holding my pen in my hand, weird , well It gave my hand something to hold...get it. I started a more intense workout, I developed more things to do, to take up my time...The first week, well let me say I found "will power" I thought I never had, it was tough especially me having this habit for 20yrs..but it was time to quit, it was killing me, ya-know "shortness of breath" no stamina, and the price, ya-know when I started a pack was 1.20, now there 5.00 if this alone isnt a detourant, well nothing will be...just take small steps, "one day at a time" I feel so much better..you will too...Good Luck

most smokers replace food as their smoking habbit. that is why they gain so much weight. so as long as your not eatting excessively, you should be okay. try going for a walk everyday. and eat healthy meals. i know i might be too young to be giving advice about this but try it out. im sure it will help =]

The problem why people gain weight, I think, when they quit smoking is because...they eat instead of smoke. That really...when u think of it, is horrid. Just try to eat in portions..and not snack too much!

Xenolan answered Monday January 8 2007, 1:24 pm:
There are two reasons why people gain weight when they quit smoking. One is that nicotine is a stimulant, and it raises the body's metabolism; take it away, and the metabolism slows down and fewer calories are burned. The other is that the craving for a cigarette is sometimes satisfied through snacking, and so one begins to consume more high-calorie food than before.

Weight loss has a simple equation at its root: burn more calories than you consume, and you lose weight. See if you can consciously replace the need to smoke with the need to get up and move around; even pacing around the living room is aerobic exercise, and curling dumbbells would be one way to keep your hands occupied.
