Question Posted Thursday December 28 2006, 7:48 pm
I'm not sure but I've been told I have OCD.
I know some things I do seem a bit odd but w/e. I'll give some examples so you can tell me what you think...
- My food cannot touch
- When I'm sitting down, people cannot touch my chair or table
- When I do my hair, it has to be perfect or I redo it
- My spelling has to be correct (caps)
- When I speak french, it has to be with a certain accent even though I'm not from the area where that accent is normal (compicated one)
- etc...
What do you think? What should I do about these things?

These can include things like what you've written, and also many others.
The difference between these small obsessions/compulsions and diagnosed OCD is that OCD will usually have a severe impact on your life. You might not be able to make it to school on time - ever - because you need to carry out an extensive cleaning routine in the mornings, for example.
If what you've described is making it difficult ot impossible for you to carry on with your normal life, then head to a doctor. He/she will be able to refer you to a psychiatrist in your area who will be able to screen you for the disorder and diagnosis it. Treatment usually includes a mixture of prescription drugs and behavioural therapy.
Imperialistic answered Thursday December 28 2006, 10:20 pm: Totally understand, honey. I have symptoms of OCD, but I'm diagnosed with the actual thing. A lot of people don't consider minor obsessions as OCD but you have to remember that all disorders have a wide range of severity. Hypochondria is an extreme case of OCD.
You seem to have the Compulsion part of the disorder, like me, which is still good enough to have OCD according to the DMV-IV-TR because OCD can consist of having either obsessions or compulsions, or both (which are the really bad cases).
But you have to go see a doctor to be sure. They are the only people who can actually diagnose you.
I spend most of my times obsessed with germs. Well, not germs per se. I don't really care about germs. I just want everything to be "clean" all the time. The weird thing is taht I don't care if its actually sanitized. If something is rinsed, its good enough for me. I rinse everything, my purse, my cell phone, my remote control. I wipe my doors down. Just with water. It used to be really bad but now I can go a day or so without rinsing. I also spend a lot of my time deleting what I've typed or written and writing it over because it doesn't feel "right". Its strange.
What you can actually do is, let yourself get used to stuff. If your spelling is incorrect, leave it like that. When you do your hair, resist the urge to redo it. It'll be tough at times but you need to do it to make yourself better.
You can read more about the disorder and treatments over here. It tells you how even the slightest compulsions can mean you might have a little bit of OCD: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) [ Imperialistic's advice column | Ask Imperialistic A Question ]
TEENAGExHEARTS answered Thursday December 28 2006, 9:01 pm: i'm not really sure that you have OCD because for one you said that your spelling has to be correct and in your question you spelling complicated wrong =] lol. i think you might just be a bit of a perfectionist like me. but if you are really certain that you have OCD then go to a doctor to check for sure. karenR answered Thursday December 28 2006, 8:50 pm: You could have it. Only a doctor can tell you for sure though. If you do, there is help available for it. It can be fixed. See your doctor. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
duudee_advicer answered Thursday December 28 2006, 8:50 pm: Honestly they just sound
like weird obsessions and ways
or even pickyness.
My friends all have problems like
these such as the radio dial has to
be on an even number.
OCD is more in the sense that
if you don't do the routine correctly
every day that something terrible
will happen.
I used to be OCD when I was younger.
I had to check every lock in my house
3 times each before I went to bed.
Then I'd wake up in the morning and I'd
have to touch each doorknob atleast
once or I thought someone might
die that day.
Also, I had to hug my mom until
it felt 'right' every morning before
school or I thought I might never
see her again. These rituals I had
took over my life until I broke down
from fear, stress, and mental exhaustion
from the worry of not perfectly
completing my rituals.
If you watch True Life: I have OCD
you might understand it to be more then
just pickyness. If you are really
that worried about it and it's taking
over your life, you can go to a doctor
for some help.
Otherwise, don't worry about it.
Locono answered Thursday December 28 2006, 8:45 pm: ok well i dont know a whole bunch about ocd. but im pretty sure there is not much you can do about it, i dont think there is some kind of medicane sp? lol i think i kinda have it..
but ya pretty much it's mind over matter,
i know like if you dont do these things, then i feels really wrong, but no matter how wrong it feels you need to try to break these things, because if you dont then they could worsen and liek take over your life
ImFakingHotPink answered Thursday December 28 2006, 8:26 pm: You can have a mild case of ocd but i'm not quite sure. do you feel like you MUST follow your rules until they are perfect. do you feel that if you do not follow these rules you have to perform some sort of ritual for instance washing your hands or turning off the lights or counting to ten. do you feel weird and uncomfurtable if you think you have to do one of your things? then you do.
