I want to get serious I wasn't sure what category to put this in so sorry if this makes people mad I just wasn't sure. Well I (f/16) have been writing poetry and short stories for a few years and have gotten special recognition and first place titles in local contests. Well I want to see if maybe some of my work can get published and I don't know where to begin.

The Writer's Market lists places that accept manuscripts without agents. It will tell you what publications need, what types of writing they want, and what they pay. This book is available in the public library. A special Writer's Market is available for Poetry. (Poets aren't well-paid, but when you ARE paid, you'll be entitled to call yourself "professional".)Note that some literary magazines, especially those publishing poems, pay only in copies of the magazine.
There are also some good Internet sites.

P.S. My first poem was published when I was 8 years old. My first PAID poem ($5!!!) was published many, many moons later. It's a tough market. ]

First thing is first--write something. Edit it. Edit it again. Make sure it's as good as you can get it.
Next, learn about query letters and agents. Practice writing query letters, and read everything you can before submitting anything to an agent or publisher. They'll look a lot more closely at your work if you approach them in a correct, educated manner.

This site will help you avoid common scams (like the poetry.com "contest" and agents who charge money to read your work). It pays to do research.
Good luck. Read as much as you can, too, so you develop your vocabulary and abilities further. Part of a writer's job is to read. ]
