Sins

Question Posted Thursday November 30 2006, 8:14 pm

Can someone give me a list of sins? Recently, I've been depressed and literally thought of anything bad that happened to me or anything bad I did, purposely or accidentally and I got the word sins stuck in my head. I also started wondering what are the numbers are about when I see people go to confession boxes on tv and the priest gives them a number after their confession.

the seven deadly sins are pride greed jealousy anger lust gluttony and sloth. these mean thinking your great, wanting lots of money, wanting what others have, being really mad, wanting to do sexual things, eating a lot, and being really lazy. I think most people have committed a lot of these sins, but as long as you try not to do them, and ask for forgiveness, it'll be ok. no one is perfect, so don't upset yourself by thinking you're a terrible person, because you aren't; you're just normal =]

I don't know what are the numbers given during confessions cos I'm not catholic, so I can't help you out there.

But I do know of the seven deadly sins :
pride
greed
jealousy
anger
lust
gluttony
sloth

These are of cos very general descriptions of all the sins in the world. It's impossible to give you a complete, detailed list of sins. Even if I can give it to you, you'd go mad trying to avoid those sins. Man are made to sin. Just don't do things which is against your conscience, and don't get youself all moody by thinking of the bad things you've done. It's all in the past; start fresh and learn from the past. Pray to God and ask for forgiveness when you feel that you've committed a sin.

What's the point in dwelling over irreversible things or stuff that you can't control?
Make sure you don't commit those bad things which you did again. Do unto others what you'd want them to do unto you.

You have to remember that although not committing any of the seven sins in your life may make you a better person, it is virtually impossible to do so because these sins occur in human nature. Unless you have been brought up living a pure homely existence, you will commit one of these sins once in a while.
I'll just give you a little breakdown of all of them
-Envy/Jealousy-
"A feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc."
If you are angry because your best friend is pretty and gets all the boys or you're mad that a girl you don't like had a better party than you, you are guilty of Envy.
-Gluttony-
"Excessive eating and drinking."
If you're eating plates and plates of food and take eight helpings of pie, you're a glutton.
-Lust-
"Uncontrolled or illicit desire or appetite; lecherousness."
Also referred to as indulging in pleasures of the body. This can vary by description, to some fantasizing and excessive sex with your husband is lust while to others, sex outside marriage is lust.
-Anger/Avarice/Wrath-
"Strong, stern, or fierce anger; deeply resentful indignation"
If a friend ditched you at a dance and you want to hurt her, these feelings are a result of your wrath.
-Greed-
"Excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions."
Cheating at games to win, leaving stingy tips, not giving to the homeless, this is all greed.
-Sloth-
"Habitual disinclination to exertion; indolence; laziness."
If you spend all day on the computer or sit in front of the TV and be a couch potato, this is your sin.
-Pride/Vanity-
"A high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc."
So if you refuse to sit next to a nerd or geek because you're too concerned with your social status or if you brag about what a good basketball player you are, you are guilty of this. It has known to be one of the most deadly sins.

there's the 10 commandments and then there's some in the bible you have to read and find out. Honestly it's like homwwork but if you would consoult a church counciler at your church or somehting he/she might help you out. Hope this helps and don't feel bad, we're only human after all ^^

The bible is contradictory on what classifies a sin. You could read the entire thing, and you'd only have a vague idea of what you're supposed to do. For example:

Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side ... and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.
-Exodus 32:27

That clearly contradicts many other things, such as:

Thou shalt not kill.
-Exodus 20:13

Which is even in the same book. The "official" list of sins is the ten commandments which can be seen here:

Do you really need a book to tell you what is good or bad? I'm not Christian, so i might be biased, ;).

The numbers after a confession is the penance(way of making up) for sin, "28 hail Marys" means they have to say "hail mary" or some prayer called hail mary(I'm not sure which) 28 times.

Whenever you are talking about numbers, I assume you must be talking about the seven deadly sins, right?

Well if you are, they're:

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

I hope I helped.
