Maybe give some free advice about: School?

Try this:

"Hello, I am helping out my school by selling magazines. I would appreciate it if you helped me out. We're raising money for [whatever you're raising money for]."

Give them the catalog of what you're selling so they can thumb through it. BE PATIENT, by the way. This might sound lame, but if a house doesn't have lights on [if you're selling during the night time] or if there are no cars in the driveway, don't try coming to the house. They might not want to be disturbed. Ring the doorbell 2 times at the most.

Hope I helped! :]

Don't let "Would you like to buy.." be the first phrase they here. Inform them of the cause you're representing and say "Would you like to support" or "Would you like to help". All you need to do is re-word things and you'll get more customers.
