dentist-cavities filled- laughing gas

Question Posted Sunday November 5 2006, 1:16 am

i am from india.
Well i think i have a cavity.. and getting cavities filled are a nightmare for me. i just cant stand it. ive never had the laughing gas and i really think that would make it less of a nightmare. my friend said that when he goes, they give him the gas. So, whats the deal with the gas? Do some dentists just not do it? or what?

Usually when you get cavities to be filled at the dentist or orthodontist, you don't need laughing gas. You just need a shot on your tooth...it justs makes the tooth numb. It doesn't hurt at all. It may pain for like a second. If you need gas, it may be sleeping gas, but definetely not laughing gas.

i've never gotten a cavity filled before, but i have had laughing gas [to get my teeth pulled]. the laughing gas totally numbs you, so you don't have to worry about this being a nightmare. you won't feel much pain at all! i think that some dentists use laughing gas while others use other methods of numbing, such as Novocain.

good luck!

Haha well they ask you if you want it first..
But if I were you I would definetly use it.
You feel like you're on a cloud..
And you feel high.
It feels really great.
Haha.
It's awesome.
And if you're to choose a flavor I'd reccomend grape.

I hope I helped.

Some dentists do it, some don't. Alot don't, though. At least where I live, they don't.

I believe laughing gas is usually used for more serious dental things like root canals or maybe the pulling of the wisdom teeth and everything, seeing as it IS gas and it's used to knock someone out for a really good while. But I have heard if a patient is extremely terrified of needles and everything, they might let you use the gas. You'll have to talk to your dentist about this.

For my advice, I would just say continue using the regular shots, if that's what you use. If you don't, ask them about it. I know it's a shot, but it only hurts for two seconds, it barely hurts at all if they put in novacaine on your gums first so your gums are numb before they do the shot and if your dentist eases it in slowly, trust me, you rarely feel anything. I just had two cavities done about 4 days ago and I was completely fine. I just brought my ipod ( CD player if you don't have one ), and listened to music, and whenever they said they were going to give me the shot, I just shut my eyes and took deep breaths.

Also, if you WERE to use the gas, I'm sure it would cost you alot more than just regular novacaine, because like I said before, it IS gas and I'm sure it's not easy for all dentist businesses to accquire, cause I'm sure whoever they purchase it from isn't just handing out free gas, lol.

I hope I helped.

There are some dentists who will put you out to fill a cavity. After all they can charge you more for it! You will just have to look and call around to find one. Many dentists these days realize that people don't come in because they are scared. So there are some who will put you to sleep.

Being petrified of dentists myself for ages, I was mostly in fear of those needles. Imagine my surprise when the dentist I went to told me it was unnecessary for me to have a shot to get a tooth filled if I didn't want one. They are just routinely given because they are expected and relieve a patients anxiety.

Since my anxiety was the shot I told him to go for it. He did tell me he could give me something at any time if I needed it. I didn't. It didn't hurt at all. The grinding noise was irritating but that was it. Sorry for the story. I hoped it might help
if you were afraid to go to the dentist. :)
