Question Posted Thursday November 2 2006, 1:12 am

I'm taking medication that makes my lips extremely dry. As a result, they are constantly chapped, and a few days ago, they started to crack and bleed on the sides. It is painful and not attractive AT ALL. Chapstick helps a little..I reapply chapstick about every 15 minutes.

How do I make the pain go away and help my lips get better? =[ Don't tell me to stop the medication. I need it, and the lip thing isn't a HUGE deal...

Vaseline, Burt's Bees beeswax lip balm (it works incredibly well, it has a cooling effect to ease pain, and you ally it with you finger.. it'll be less painful)

Plus, drink plenty of water. & when your done taking the medication and your lips are just cracked and peeling, gently exfoliating with sugar and water will probably help a lot.

You have gotten some good answers so far. I just want to add that you might want to try a "wet", for lack of a better word, chapped lip product like Blistex. Rubbing a dryer lip balm like chapstick on them may irritate them more.

1)Drink lots of water. Water will hydrate you and prevent you from getting chapped skin. Don't lick your lips. There's teeth and gum bacteria, leftover food, etc in your saliva so try not to lick your lips during these period of time.

I had a friend who kept licking his lips during winter time in China [we were on a holiday] and his lips swell up to the size of sausages the next day.

2)Stay away from cold places as it dehydrates you. Stay in warm places.

Meawhile, do continue to apply your lipbalm.

Do you have vaseline? Dry to use chapstick and some lipgloss or something to keep it wet.

You can go to a doctor and tell them this.. and see what you can do. They probably have something for you.

Burt's Bees lip balm is a good product
