Question Posted Wednesday September 27 2006, 5:54 pm
I'm 13/f and I'm in 8th grade. I've been in band since 6th grade and I enjoy it (but sometimes i really don't like it). I want to be in band in high school yet I don't because it can be really stressful sometimes with all the competitions and stuff. I also don't want to do marching band but they make you and being in high school band is very time consuming...but I still like playing. Also, my best friends who were in band this year are quitting, so I won't know anyone. My question is...should I continue playing since I enjoy it or quit?

I didn't like how it was so time consuming, and how I never had time for any other friends.
But I'm just going to tell you, my best friend from middle school continued with band in highschool, and we don't even talk anymore. We just drifted apart, since she's still so involved in band, and we never had time to hang out. We don't even talk anymore. But she loves it, and still has the passion for it.
I still pull out my flute (what I played in band) and play some of the sheetmusic that I had from 8th grade, and play it. And sometimes I really miss it. But I'm glad that I quit band, BECAUSE it's so time consuming. A few of my friends that are in band never have time for anything, and they're incredibly stressed out.
This isn't advice, persay, but just what's happened in my situation.
Hope I helped. <3 [ seventimesagain's advice column | Ask seventimesagain A Question ]
uisforukelele answered Wednesday September 27 2006, 9:13 pm: hmm, well, if you don't want to do marching band, i think you're out of luck. do you know for a fact that you won't like it? i'm a freshman and i thought it would suck this year, but i've actually made a lot of new friends and it's kind of fun, even though i'm in a military band. if you just like to play and won't want to participate in band activities, i would quit and just continue playing (maybe even take private lessons). what do you play? marsbars answered Wednesday September 27 2006, 7:11 pm: It seems that most people below me are telling you to quit. But i am a new freshman at my highschool and I've done band from 5th grade, this will be my 5th year taking band. And I love band(although I agree with you I HATE it sometimes) But I do it more for the people in band, than the actually playing my instrument. At least in my band, the people are really fun to hang out with. And another perk is you get to go on trips and stuff. Try band, if u dont make any new friends or dont like the people in it, it probably isn't worth your time. Unless of course you really like playing your instrument, because thats the whole point of band to begin with.
So essentially what I am saying is, if you dont enjoy it, dont stick with it. If you make friends, love the people, and love to play your instrument then go for it!
P.S I did marching band, its not so bad, It looks good on college application!!! [ marsbars's advice column | Ask marsbars A Question ]
Exquisitechick answered Wednesday September 27 2006, 6:58 pm: Well, i quit band before marching band started. [[but i had my own reasons]] I wouldnt quit if i was you, since you enjoy it. Because u wil regret it in the end. When we have pep asemblys i always look at the drummers and think wow that could be me, and think about how dumb i am for quitting. But, if you like it then dont quit. You'll honestly regret it. && you dont know anyone? Thats how you make friends! Its always fun meeting new people. Give it a shot and see how you like it. And i dont mean like 2 days, give it a REAL shot =]
karenR answered Wednesday September 27 2006, 6:48 pm: I know exactly what you mean. I HATED marching band.
I don't know if you can do this at your high school,
but I got around it by taking band 2nd semester and something else first. I didn't mind concert band which was 2nd semester. Just hated marching band! :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
