Question Posted Saturday September 23 2006, 3:53 am
13/f/8th grade. i have baby-sat my own brother and sister before, but that is basically it. i am going to start baby-sitting the kids on my street and in my neighborhood. any advice on how to start? like what do say to parents, what i should have them pay, what emergency numbers i should have, anything at all?
The average is usually $3-5 per hour which is pretty good for teens.
You want to know the following numbers
-The parents' numbers (cells)
-Your parents cell numbers
-Their home number
-Police Department
-Poison Control Centre
-Ambulance
-Fire Department
-Someone who lives close that you trust
Ask the parents the following questions
-What time will you be back at?
-Do the child(ren) have any deseise/medications they need to take?
-Where can I contact you at
-May I use TV/Computer/Music player etc.
-Where is your phone?
-Do you have an alarm system (for overnight use)
Also, ask them to give you a tour of their house, and show you how to use Epi-Pen, or any electronics.

Goto the local YMCA/Red Cross and certify in First Aid and CPR. That puts an extra trust factor for parents, knowing that if an emergency happens - you have it covered.
As for getting started, some advertise yourself as a babysitter or a mother's helper. Mother's helpers watch the kids when the parents are in the house and too busy (cooking dinner, taking a shower, etc).
Sign up for babysitters.com to obtain parents looks for sitter and put flyers around the area (grocery stores, community boards). $5 per hours is a good place to start for up to 3 kids and around .50-$1 per kid after that.
Parents will tell you everything you need to know: Their kids habits, contact number and emergencies numbers.
bob_sayz_it answered Sunday September 24 2006, 1:45 am: a) you can make a pamphlet with your name, number, and rate and put it peoples mailboxes.
b)try starting with 3.50/h and working your way up.
c) you should have the nubers of the parents cell or pager, the place they're going, the local police/fire department, and an emergency number or two that is chosen by the parents.
d)you should also have the address of the house you're at and an emergency address you can get to easily. they should be chosen by the parents.
geegollyHOLLY answered Sunday September 24 2006, 1:23 am: You should probably charge between 5 and 7 dollars. Then, just casually mention to the parents that you're starting a baby-sitting service and they should provide the emergency numbers for you. ductape_n_roses answered Saturday September 23 2006, 10:23 am: Great way to start: Take the Redcross Babysitting course. I took it...it's easy and fun. Make flyers to promote your babystiting job. If your negihborhood has a montly newspaper thing, ask the editor to put your name in there..something like that.
Emergency numbers, basic ones are 911 police and poison control center in your area. Before the parents leave, ask them to leave a set of emergency phone numbers you can call--which will include their cell or beeper.
